Hot-Melt Glue Labeler

Product

Overview

A hot-melt glue labeler applies precut paper labels to round containers at very high speed using a fast-setting hot-melt adhesive. It is built for beer, soft drink, and water lines that run several hundred bottles a minute, where the economy of a paper label and the speed of an adhesive that sets in under a second both matter. Containers ride on a turning carousel, a rotating vacuum drum picks labels from a stack and carries them past a glue applicator, and the glued label is handed to the spinning container and pressed down before the glue cools. The combination of a stack of cheap precut labels and a glue that grabs almost instantly is what lets the machine outrun cold-glue and pressure-sensitive alternatives.

Containers load onto the Carousel Frame carousel through the Infeed and Starwheel, labels come from the Label Magazine onto the Vacuum Transfer Drum, the Hot-Melt Glue Unit lays adhesive on the label edges, and the Press and Brush Station seats the label as it sets. The Drive and Control turns the carousel and drum in fixed ratio and the Electrical Cabinet cabinet powers the drives and heaters.

The rotary carousel

Speed comes from running every container in motion rather than stopping it. The Carousel Frame is a turning Carousel Table on a Center Column that carries a ring of Bottle Plate platforms, each of which holds a container and can spin it on its own axis. As the carousel turns, each plate spins its container at the transfer point so the label wraps on smoothly. Containers load through the Infeed and Starwheel, where a Timing Screw spaces them and an Infeed Starwheel starwheel sets one on each plate, while an Outfeed Starwheel lifts the finished bottles off onto the exit conveyor.

Picking labels from the stack

The labels are precut and stacked rather than reel-fed, which keeps the label cost low. The Label Magazine holds the stack in a Magazine Box with a Stack Pusher pushing the front label to a fixed pickup line. The Vacuum Transfer Drum rotates past and its Pickup Pad vacuum pads peel the single front label off the stack, while Gripper Finger fingers hold the rest of the stack back so only one label leaves at a time. Pulling exactly one label per cycle is the trick the magazine has to get right at high speed, since a double pick or a miss both spoil a bottle.

Gluing on the drum

The held label travels on the drum past the glue applicator, which stripes adhesive only where it is needed. The Hot-Melt Glue Unit keeps adhesive granules molten in a Melt Tank, pumps it through a Heated Hose with a Melt Pump, and feeds a Glue Roller that carries a thin film. As the drum passes, its Glue Segment pads pick adhesive off the roller and stamp stripes onto the leading and trailing edges of the label. The Heating Element heaters and Temperature Sensor sensors hold the whole path at the working temperature, since hot-melt that runs too cool will not wet the paper and too hot will char and string.

Vacuum, transfer, and pressing

The Vacuum Transfer Drum holds each label to a Drum Segment by suction drawn through a ported Drum Shell and a Vacuum Pump. A Vacuum Valve switches the vacuum on to grip the label and off at the moment of transfer, so the glued label releases cleanly onto the spinning container. The Press and Brush Station station then takes over: a Press Roller seats the leading edge, the bottle spins to wrap the body, and a Wrap Brush folds the trailing edge over onto the leading glue stripe. Because the hot-melt sets as it cools, the label is fixed within a fraction of a second, so a Smoothing Pad only needs to smooth the wrap rather than hold it.

Control and electrical

Every motion is locked to carousel position. The Drive and Control runs a Main Motor through a Gearbox Housing, a Master Encoder that ties the drum and bottle plates to the carousel, and a Motion Controller that times pickup, gluing, and transfer. The operator sets recipe, speed, and glue temperature on the Touchscreen HMI. The Electrical Cabinet cabinet holds the Power Supply, the Servo Drive amplifiers, and a Heat Controller that keeps the glue path at temperature.

Use and variants

Hot-melt labelers run the fastest beverage lines because precut paper plus a fast-setting glue beats both the cold-glue Wrap-Around Labeling Machine on speed and the pressure-sensitive Front-and-Back Labeler on label cost. They suit round glass and PET bottles and cans where a wrap or a front-and-back patch label is wanted. The trade-off is the glue system: it must be kept hot, cleaned of char, and supplied with the right grade of adhesive, and it cannot do clear no-label-look graphics the way a pressure-sensitive machine can. Variants add a back-label Label Magazine and second Vacuum Transfer Drum to apply two labels per turn, and some lines combine hot-melt body labeling with a separate neck or foil head on the same carousel.
