Counter-Pressure Filler
ProductOverview
A counter-pressure filler puts carbonated beverages into bottles without losing the dissolved gas. Pouring carbonated liquid into an open container at atmospheric pressure makes it foam and outgas, so the drink goes flat and the fill level wanders. The counter-pressure method seals the bottle to the Filling Valve first, fills it with CO2 to the same pressure as the product, then lets the product flow in while gas escapes back to the tank. Because the pressure across the liquid never drops, the CO2 stays in solution and the bottle fills cleanly. The machine described here is a rotary type: a Frame and Turret carries twelve stations around a turret, and each bottle moves through the full cycle as the turret rotates one revolution.
Frame and turret
The Base Frame is a welded 304 stainless box that anchors the Center Column and the conveyor. The Turret Star Table rotates on a Slewing Bearing, a large slewing bearing that takes both the weight of the loaded stations and the side load from indexing. A Servo Motor drives the table through the Index Gearbox, which uses a Helical Gear Pair reduction inside a Gearbox Housing sealed by an Oil Seal and an O-Ring Set. The reduction lets the servo hold the turret position firmly so each gas step fires at the correct station angle. Six Guard Panel sections enclose the moving parts, and six Leveling Foot screws set the frame level on the floor.
Header tank and product supply
Product arrives in the Tank Bowl, an annular reservoir mounted on the column above the valves. The Level Probe reads the liquid height and signals the Product Inlet Valve valve, whose Inlet Actuator strokes the Inlet Modulating Plug to hold the level steady. The bowl headspace connects through the Tank Gas Connection to the CO2 supply, so the product surface sits under a constant CO2 blanket at the chosen pressure. A Pressure Sensor on the bowl confirms that pressure, and the Sight Glass gives a visual check. Two CIP Spray Ball heads wash the bowl during cleaning. Keeping the product cold, near 0-4 degrees C, raises how much CO2 the liquid holds and lowers the tendency to foam during the fill.
Gas system
The CO2 Gas System runs three jobs from the same CO2 supply, each at its own pressure. The CO2 Inlet Regulator drops bulk gas to working pressure. The Purge Regulator sets a low purge pressure, and the Counter-Pressure Regulator sets the counter pressure that matches the product. Gas reaches the spinning turret through a Rotary Gas Union and is split at each valve by the Gas Distribution Manifold. Every station carries a Purge Solenoid Valve, a Pressurize Solenoid Valve, and a Snift Solenoid Valve, each built on a common Solenoid Valve Body switched by a Relay. The snift gas leaves through a Snift Muffler so the release is quiet. The purge step admits a low-pressure CO2 sweep that displaces the air sitting in the empty sealed bottle. On machines that need very low oxygen pickup, the bottle is first evacuated and then purged twice, which drives residual air below one percent before product enters.
Filling valve and bottle lift
The Filling Valve seals to the bottle through a Sealing Bell, guided by a Centering Cone as the Bottle Lift raises the bottle. The Lift Cylinder strokes the Lift Piston Rod and Bottle Platform upward, timed by a Cam Follower Roller riding the fixed Lift Cam Track, with a Linear Guide Rail keeping the lift straight and an Oil Seal on the rod. Once sealed and pressurized, the Liquid Shutoff Plug opens and product flows down the Fill Tube to the bottle bottom while displaced gas returns up the Vent Tube. A Flow Spreader runs product down the glass wall to keep it calm. When liquid reaches the vent tube tip it stops the fill, and the Valve Return Spring closes the plug.
Conveyor, fobbing, and control
Empty bottles arrive on the Tabletop Chain of the Conveyor and Indexing, are spaced by the Feed Screw, and handed to the turret by the Infeed Star Wheel. The Discharge Star Wheel takes filled bottles away, all driven by the Conveyor Geared Motor through a Drive Belt. After filling, the Snift Solenoid Valve vents the headspace gradually so the seal can break without the drink surging. The Foam Knock-Down then fires a brief jet from a Fobbing Jet Nozzle, fed by the Jet Pump, which raises a small foam head that pushes the last air out of the neck before capping. The whole sequence is timed by the PLC reading the Turret Encoder, with recipes set on the HMI Touchscreen and the turret driven through the Servo Drive. The Pneumatics block supplies clean air to every lift and actuator across the machine.
