Bulk Bag Discharger
ProductOverview
A Bulk Bag Discharger is a frame and handling system that empties a flexible intermediate bulk container, the woven polypropylene "bulk bag" or FIBC, into a downstream process. Bulk bags hold 500 to 2000 kg of powder or granules: cement, flour, sugar, plastic pellets, minerals, pharmaceutical excipients. They are cheaper to ship and store than rigid containers, but a full bag is awkward and heavy, and once its spout is untied the contents fall in an uncontrolled rush unless the discharge is managed. The discharger holds the bag securely above a hopper, opens the spout in a contained way, helps cohesive powders flow, and meters the material out at a rate the process can accept.
The machine replaces the older practice of slitting bags by hand over an open hopper, which spilled product, raised dust, and exposed workers to lifting strain and inhalation hazards. A discharger keeps the bag suspended, the dust enclosed, and the flow controlled.
Frame and load path
The Support Frame is a welded steel tower that carries the full weight of a loaded bag plus the dynamic load of a swinging or settling bag. Four Frame Column form the corners, tied together by Cross Bracing so the structure stays square. A Cantilever Arm runs across the top, and the bag hangs from it. Each leg ends in a Anchor Base Plate lag-bolted to the concrete floor, because a 2-ton bag swinging during a forklift load would tip an unanchored frame.
Cantilever designs let a forklift load the bag from the front without driving under the structure. The alternative is a tall portal frame where the truck reaches up between the columns, which needs more headroom.
Lifting and positioning
The Hoist System raises the bag and moves it over the hopper. A Electric Chain Hoist, typically a 1-2 ton geared chain hoist, lifts at 2-4 m/min. The bag loops hook onto a cruciform Lifting Frame, and on cantilever models a Trolley rolls the suspended bag inward along the arm until it sits centered above the hopper.
A Load Cell in the lift path weighs the bag continuously. The controller uses this to confirm the bag is empty (weight has dropped to the tare of the empty sack) and, on metering systems, to dose a target mass into the process. Weight feedback also detects a stuck bag that has stopped flowing.
Connecting and opening the bag
The hardest part of bulk bag discharge is opening the spout without spilling or releasing dust. The Bag Interface handles this. A Spout Clamp, often an inflatable cuff, seals the bag spout against the hopper inlet so material drops straight in rather than escaping around the neck. An Access Door with sealed gloves or an interlock lets an operator reach in and untie the spout drawstring while containment holds.
For partial discharge, an Iris Valve pinches the spout closed so a half-empty bag can be retied and stored. A Bag Support Tray supports the slack bottom of the bag so the final material drains down rather than collecting in folds.
Promoting flow
Many powders do not flow freely. They form arches (bridges) that span the bag outlet, or rat-holes where material drains only through a central channel and leaves the rest hung up on the bag walls. The Flow Aid System system fights both. Powered Massage Paddle plates, stroked by Paddle Cylinder air cylinders, press the lower sides of the bag in a timed cycle, collapsing arches. A Bag Tensioner keeps the bag stretched downward as it empties, so the bottom forms a steep cone that drains completely instead of sagging into a flat pocket. A Pneumatic Vibrator on the hopper wall fluidizes material that has stalled below the bag.
Flow aids are tuned to the product. Free-flowing pellets need almost none; sticky, hygroscopic, or fine cohesive powders need aggressive massaging. Over-vibration can pack some powders tighter, so the cycle is set per material.
Hopper, metering, and dust control
Below the bag, the Discharge Hopper catches material in a cone-bottom Hopper Body whose walls are steeper than the powder's angle of repose. A Slide Gate isolates the outlet during bag changes, and a Rotary Valve meters powder out at a controlled rate while sealing against air leakage when the outlet feeds a pneumatic conveying line. A Level Sensor tells the controller when the hopper needs refilling.
The Dust Control system keeps powder out of the room. A Dust Hood surrounds the spout connection, and an Extraction Fan holds it under slight negative pressure so dust flows inward. Captured powder collects on Filter Cartridge elements, which a Pulse-Jet Valve periodically cleans with bursts of compressed air, dropping the powder back into the hopper.
Control and operation
The Control System tie the subsystems together. A PLC in the Control Panel sequences the cycle: lift the bag, position it, clamp the spout, start massage and metering, watch the load cell, and stop when empty. A HMI Touchscreen touchscreen shows bag weight, batch totals, and flow-aid settings, and an Air Manifold of solenoid valves drives the pneumatic paddles, vibrator, and filter pulse jets.
Materials and variants
Frames are painted carbon steel for general industry or 304/316 stainless for food and pharmaceutical duty where washdown and contamination control matter. Variants include forklift-loaded versions without an integral hoist, full-enclosure designs for toxic or potent compounds, partial-discharge models with the iris valve for expensive ingredients used in small doses, and integrated weigh-batch systems where the load cell doses material into a downstream mixer. Pharmaceutical and food units add quick-clean tool-free connections and crevice-free welds for sanitary cleaning.
