Vertical Carousel
ProductOverview
A vertical carousel is an enclosed storage machine that hangs a series of shelves from a pair of chains and circulates them around a vertical loop, like a Ferris wheel for inventory, bringing whichever shelf the operator calls down to a waist-height access window. The principle is goods-to-person: rather than a person climbing or walking to find an item, the machine delivers the right shelf to a fixed, ergonomic position. Because the shelves stack from floor to ceiling inside a slim cabinet, a vertical carousel converts unused overhead height into usable storage and recovers floor space that conventional shelving wastes on aisles and ladders.
The machine is an enclosed Cabinet and Frame housing a Carrier Chain System loop, a set of tilting Shelf Carrier shelves, a Drive Unit, an Access Window for the operator, and a Control System with a layered Safety System.
Cabinet and structure
The Cabinet and Frame is a welded Structural Frame clad in Sheet Metal Panel sections, closed by a Top Cover and standing on a Base Plate with Leveling Foot adjusters. The enclosure does real work beyond looks: it keeps dust and unauthorised hands off the stock, it can be locked for security, and it contains the moving carriers so the only opening is the controlled window. Sealing the cabinet also lets a single unit be specified for clean, dry, or temperature-controlled storage of sensitive parts.
Carrier chain and carriers
The heart of the machine is the Carrier Chain System. Two heavy Roller Chain runs loop over a pair of driven Top Sprocket wheels and idle Bottom Sprocket wheels, supported along their length by Chain Track guides and held taut by Chain Tensioner units. Each Shelf Carrier hangs between the two chains on Pivot Pin pivots so that, as the chain carries it over the top and down the far side, the carrier swings to stay level and nothing tips off. The carrier holds a Shelf Tray that can be split by an adjustable Tray Divider Set into bins for small parts, and rides steady on Carrier Roller guides. Keeping every shelf level all the way round the loop is what lets the carousel store loose components and trays, not just boxed goods.
Drive and indexing
The Drive Unit turns the top sprocket shaft. A Servo Motor drives a Helical Gear Pair inside a Gearbox Housing, rotating the Drive Shaft in either direction, and a Holding Brake holds the loop still once a carrier reaches the window. A Position Encoder counts carrier positions so the controller always rotates the shortest way to the requested shelf, clockwise or anticlockwise, which keeps wait times short even on a tall unit with many carriers. Bidirectional shortest-path indexing is the difference between a carousel that feels instant and one that crawls through every shelf to reach the far side.
Access window and picking
The operator works at the Access Window, an opening set at standing height through a Window Frame, with a Work Shelf for staging picked items and a roller or hinged Window Gate that closes while the carriers move. A Pick Light pointer shows exactly which bin on the presented tray to pick, and a Work Light keeps the shelf well lit. Picking at a single fixed window removes walking and reaching, so pick rates rise and picking errors fall, especially when the carousel is linked to inventory software that drives the pick light from the order.
Control and safety
The Control System runs from an Microcontroller with a Operator Keypad for shelf selection, a Variable Frequency Drive giving smooth start and stop, and Position Sensor devices marking the home and index points. The Safety System guards the operator: a Light Barrier across the window stops rotation instantly if a hand or object breaks the beam, a Gate Switch prevents motion unless the gate is set correctly, a Emergency Stop is within reach, and a Overload Clutch protects the drive if a carrier jams.
Variants and applications
Units range from compact cabinets two metres tall to machines reaching through several floors with a window on each level, sharing one carrier loop between departments. Vertical carousels are common in tool cribs, maintenance stores, electronics and small-parts assembly, pharmacy and laboratory storage, and document archives, anywhere the inventory is many small items, floor space is tight, and the same shelf is reached repeatedly. They suit moderate throughput with high item counts, and pair naturally with light-directed picking to drive accuracy.
Maintenance and reliability
The chain loop is the part that determines service life. The two Roller Chain runs are inspected for stretch and lubricated on schedule, and the Chain Tensioner units are adjusted to keep both chains carrying equal load so the carriers stay level. The Top Sprocket teeth and the Ball Bearing sets on the sprocket shafts are checked for wear, since a worn sprocket lets the chain ride high and skip. The Pivot Pin pivots on each carrier are greased so the shelves swing freely and hang level through the turns. On the control side, the Position Encoder and Position Sensor devices are verified so the machine continues to stop the requested carrier squarely at the window, and the Light Barrier and Gate Switch are function-tested because operator safety depends on them halting rotation the instant a hand enters the opening.
Sizing and integration
A vertical carousel is usually sized to fill the available height of a room or bay, because every extra carrier added within that height increases capacity at almost no extra floor cost. Where ceilings are high, a single tall unit can serve two or three floors with a separate window on each level, sharing one carrier loop between departments stacked above one another. Units are commonly linked to warehouse or inventory software through the controller, so the Operator Keypad selection and the Pick Light direction are driven directly by the order being filled rather than entered by hand, which removes look-up time and keeps the physical stock and the system record in step.
