Laden Container Handler

Product

Overview

A laden container handler, commonly called a reach stacker, lifts and stacks loaded shipping containers in a terminal. Unlike a forklift-type machine that carries a box close in, it uses a luffing telescopic boom to reach out and place a full container several rows deep and up to five high, so a yard can be served from one lane without a rail-bound crane. A loaded 40 ft box can weigh thirty tonnes, and holding that mass out on a boom creates a large overturning moment, so the whole machine is built around resisting that moment safely.

The Chassis and Counterweight and its Counterweight anchor the machine, the Telescoping Boom reaches and lifts, the Top-Lift Spreader grips and rotates the box, the Diesel Power Pack supplies the high power a heavy lift demands, the Driveline and Axles moves a sixty-tonne machine, and the Hydraulic System power every motion under load. An Electrical and Control system with a load-moment indicator keeps each lift inside the stability envelope.

Boom and reach

The Telescoping Boom is the defining element. A Base Boom Section section pins to the frame trunnion and a Fly Boom Section section telescopes out of it, driven by an Extension Cylinder inside the boom and supported on replaceable Wear Pad wear pads that carry the sliding load. Two large Luffing Cylinder rams raise and lower the boom angle, and the combination of luffing and telescoping lets the operator reach over the first row of stacks to set a box two or three rows back. At the tip, the Boom Head carries the spreader. The boom and its rams are sized for the column load of a full container at full reach, which is the worst case the structure must survive.

The spreader

The Top-Lift Spreader grips the box from above with four Twistlock cones in the corner castings, each turned by a Twistlock Cylinder. A Landing Sensor at each corner confirms seating before the locks turn, so a loaded box is never lifted half-engaged. The Spreader Frame telescopes on Telescope Cylinder rams between 20 ft and 40 ft, and Level Cylinder level cylinders keep the box flat as the boom angle changes. What sets a laden handler apart from an empty handler is the Slew Rotator, a hydraulic slew drive with a Slew Motor and a Helical Gear Pair slew ring that rotates the whole spreader so the operator can square a box to a skewed row without repositioning the truck.

Power pack and driveline

A heavy lift at reach is a power-hungry job, so the Diesel Power Pack is built around a large turbocharged Diesel Engine of roughly 250-350 kW with a combined Cooling Pack cooling pack for engine, charge air, and hydraulic oil. The Driveline and Axles uses a Powershift Transmission with a Torque Converter so the machine can creep up to a stack and stall against the lift, and drive passes through a Driveshaft to the Heavy Drive Axle. That front axle takes the full loaded weight, so its Planetary Hub reductions and oil-cooled Wet Disc Brake discs are sized for a sixty-tonne machine on a grade. The rear Steer Axle steers on a Steer Cylinder for maneuvering in a loaded yard.

Hydraulics

The Hydraulic System are the muscle. A variable-displacement Main Pump supplies high flow only when a function calls for it, feeding a load-sensing Load-Sensing Valve Block of proportional Spool Valve sections. Because a loaded boom must be held against gravity and lowered under control, Counterbalance Valve units lock the luff circuit and meter the descent, while Accumulator vessels smooth pressure spikes and damp boom bounce when the machine travels with a box. Relief Valve settings cap pressure, an Oil Cooler holds temperature in continuous duty, and several Pressure Sensor units feed the safety system.

Safety and control

Because the overturning moment grows with both load and reach, the Electrical and Control system carries a dedicated Load-Moment Indicator load-moment indicator. It reads boom pressure through Pressure Sensor units and boom angle through the Boom Angle Sensor, computes the moment, and slows or stops a lift before the machine can tip. The Vehicle Control Unit coordinates joystick inputs from the cab with the valve block, and the Operator Display shows load, reach, and overload warnings. In the Operator Cab, an air-suspended Suspension Seat and Corner Camera views of the corner castings help the operator place boxes precisely from an elevated, sometimes sliding cab.

Use and place in the fleet

Reach stackers are the flexible heavy lifter of a container terminal and an inland rail or barge depot. They handle full boxes that an Empty Container Handler cannot, move freely without the rails or fixed runway of a Rail-Mounted Gantry Crane, and need far less civil work than a Rubber-Tyred Gantry Crane. Their limits are stacking density, since reaching deep into a block reduces capacity row by row, and stability, since the load- moment system trades available lift for safety as reach increases. A terminal typically runs reach stackers for rail and yard work and switches to gantry cranes when stacking density and throughput justify the heavier infrastructure.
