Bag Palletizer

Product

Overview

A bag palletizer stacks filled sacks of products like cement, flour, feed, fertilizer, sugar, or pet food onto pallets in a stable, interlocked pattern. Sacks behave nothing like rigid cases: they are floppy, the fill shifts, and the profile changes from one bag to the next, so a bag palletizer spends as much effort conditioning each sack as it does stacking it. The result has to be a square, self-supporting load that survives stretch-wrapping and transport without slumping.

How it works

Filled sacks arrive on the Bag Infeed from the bagging line. An inline Check Weigher weighs each one in motion, and a Reject Gate diverts any that fall outside the fill tolerance, so an underfilled or overfilled sack never ends up on a customer pallet. The sacks then pass through the Bag Flattener, where opposed press belts squeeze each bag to redistribute the contents and square its profile. Flattening is the step that makes a neat stack possible: a lumpy, unconditioned sack stacks crooked and the load leans.

A Bag Turner rotates selected sacks ninety degrees so the layer pattern interlocks like brickwork, which is what binds the courses together and keeps the stack from shearing apart. The oriented sacks accumulate on the Row-Forming Table, where row stops position each one and side pushers compact the layer so the bags nest tight with no gaps. Once a full layer is formed, the Layer Gripper takes it.

Layer transfer

The layer transfer is the heart of a bag palletizer and the part that differs most from a case machine. The gripper is a Cartesian Cartesian Gantry carrying a Clamshell Plates head: two thin steel plates slide under the formed layer to support it, Side Clamp plates hold the sides, and the gantry carries the whole layer over the pallet. To deposit it, the two clamshell plates split apart and withdraw sideways, lowering the layer gently onto the stack rather than dropping it. A gentle set-down matters because a dropped layer of soft sacks scatters; the clamshell keeps the pattern intact all the way down. The Pallet Elevator then lowers the pallet by one layer height so the next layer lands at the same fixed level.

Pallet handling

The machine supplies and removes its own pallets. An integral Pallet Magazine holds a stack of empties and feeds one onto the Pallet Conveyor when called. The elevator's forked Lift Table raises it to the deposit height and steps down layer by layer as the stack grows; when full it lowers to floor level and the Discharge Conveyor carries it out to a stretch wrapper. Because pallet supply and discharge are built in, the machine runs unattended between magazine refills.

Materials and construction

A bag palletizer is heavy steel because it handles thousands of fifty-kilogram sacks a shift. The Frame & Guarding is a welded steel weldment holding the row table, gantry, and elevator on a common datum, since a square stack depends on every station staying aligned. Belts that contact dusty product, common with cement and flour, are abrasion-resistant and washdown-rated, and rollers run on sealed bearings to keep product dust out. The clamshell plates are thin hardened steel that slides under a soft layer without snagging, and the press belts in the flattener are tensioned rubber. The elevator runs on a forked lift table guided by columns and hoisted on roller Lift Chain through a worm gearbox that holds position when power is removed.

Control and patterns

The Control Cabinet cabinet holds a PLC, one Servo Drive per major axis, and the operator Operator HMI. The PLC sequences the flattener, turner, row stops, and gantry against each other and tracks the layer count. Stack patterns are stored as recipes selected by product: the recipe sets which sacks get turned, the row counts, and the layer count for a given bag size and pallet. Changing product is a recipe selection, since the conditioning and turning adapt to the stored pattern.

Variants and use

Bag palletizers vary by transfer method and product. The clamshell-deck type described here is the common choice for medium and heavy sacks; lighter or smaller sacks sometimes use a robotic arm with a bag gripper instead, trading speed for flexibility. Dusty products like cement drive a washdown, dust-tight build with extra bearing protection, while food-grade lines for flour or sugar use stainless contact surfaces. In service the machine runs largely unattended, and maintenance centres on the press and conveyor belts, the clamshell slides, and the elevator chains, all wear items. Keeping the flattener set correctly is the setting that most affects stack quality, since the squareness of every layer starts with how well each sack was conditioned on the way in.
