Forklift Paper-Roll Clamp Product

Overview

A paper-roll clamp is a hydraulic attachment that replaces the forks of a counterbalance lift truck, gripping large paper rolls between two curved arms and rotating them through 360 degrees. Paper rolls — newsprint, kraft, containerboard — weigh 500 to 3,500 kg, arrive on end or on their side, and have no pallet, no core bar, and a surface that bruises: a clamp is the only practical way to move them at production speed. The same architecture, with different pads and force ranges, handles bales, drums and white goods.

The attachment stacks four subsystems between the truck and the load: the Carriage Mount hangs on the fork carriage, the Rotator Unit provides endless rotation, the Clamp Body Frame carries the Clamp Arm Set, and the Clamp Hydraulic System with its Grip Pressure Control applies a grip force matched to the roll.

How it works

Grip is pure friction. The roll is held by the product of clamp force, pad friction coefficient and contact geometry; the standing design rule is a friction-based security factor of roughly 2 against slip under braking and cornering loads. Two double-acting Clamp Cylinder units, typically 80–100 mm bore, close the arms with up to 50 kN each; a Flow Divider equalises arm speed so the roll is not pushed sideways during closing. The arms are asymmetric: the Short Clamp Arm sits close to the body and the Long Clamp Arm reaches around the far side of the roll. On split-arm models the long arm is divided into two independently articulating halves, allowing the clamp to take two rolls of slightly different diameter in one cycle.

Force reaches the paper through pivoting Contact Pad plates that self-align to the roll curvature on their Pad Pivot Pin pins, spreading pressure over a large arc. This matters because the failure mode is not dropping the roll but crushing it: out-of-round rolls jam printing-press reel stands, and clamp damage is a leading cause of paper-mill freight claims. The Pressure Reducing Valve therefore caps circuit pressure to a value selected for the paper grade — soft tissue grades may take half the pressure of containerboard — with the actual pressure shown on the cab Pressure Indicator. A small Hydraulic Accumulator holds grip pressure against thermal contraction of the oil during long carries, and a Pilot-Operated Check Valve valve on each cylinder locks the oil in if a hose bursts or the engine stalls: the roll stays gripped until pilot pressure deliberately releases it.

Rotation

The Rotator Unit sandwiched between mount plate and clamp body is a hydraulic slewing drive: a Rotation Hydraulic Motor gerotor motor turns a Worm Reduction Drive meshing with teeth on the Rotator Slewing Ring slewing ring. The worm is self-locking, so a roll gripped off-centre cannot back-drive the rotation — the clamp holds any angle without a brake. Continuous 360-degree rotation requires oil to cross the rotating joint, which is the job of the Hydraulic Rotary Union, a multi-passage rotary manifold in the rotator centre. In service the rotator upends rolls: vertical rolls are clamped, rotated 90 degrees for horizontal transport or loading, and stood upright again at the press; full inversion lets damaged ends be presented for rewinding.

Truck integration

The attachment hangs on the truck's fork carriage by ISO 2328 hook profiles — Upper Mounting Hook over the top bar, bolted Lower Locking Hook under the bottom bar, with a Centering Lug in the carriage notch. Class II carriages suit trucks to about 2.5 t, class III to 5 t. The truck needs third and fourth auxiliary hydraulic functions (clamp and rotate) plumbed through the mast, usually via internal hose reeving, delivering 40–60 L/min.

Fitting the clamp reduces what the truck can lift. The attachment's own 700–1,400 kg mass and its 250–350 mm of lost load centre both subtract from the truck's rated capacity; a 4 t truck commonly re-rates to about 2.5–2.8 t with a roll clamp. EN ISO 3691-1 and ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 require the combination to carry a new capacity plate, and many sites add clamp-force interlocks that prevent travel until pressure confirms a secure grip.

Variants

Bale clamps use flat ribbed arms for pulp and recycled-fibre bales; carton clamps use very large flat pads at low pressure for appliances; drum clamps use small radius arms for one to four steel drums. Rotating versions of each share the same rotator module. "Intelligent" clamps add a Pressure Sensor and roll-diameter sensing to compute required pressure automatically per pick, removing the operator from the force decision — adopted widely after studies attributed most roll damage to manual over-clamping.
