Modular Transporter

Product

Overview

A self-propelled modular transporter, universally abbreviated SPMT, is a computer-steered platform on many wheels used to move objects too heavy for any other ground vehicle: bridge spans, refinery vessels, ship sections, turbine generators, and offshore modules weighing hundreds or thousands of tonnes. A single module is a low flat deck on several rows of wheels. Its defining feature is modularity: modules couple together end to end and side by side to build a transporter of almost any size, and the combined unit is driven by one operator walking alongside with a radio remote.

The engineering problem an SPMT solves is spreading an enormous concentrated load evenly onto the ground while still being able to steer, climb grades, and keep the cargo level over uneven surfaces. It does this with a hydraulic suspension that behaves like a fluid bed and a steering system that gives every wheel its own commanded angle.

Platform deck and load path

The cargo rests on the Platform Deck, a box-girder Deck Frame topped with Deck Plate sections and fitted with rated Lashing Point fittings. Curved or point loads sit on removable Saddle Bolster saddles. The deck does not carry the load directly to the wheels; it transfers it into the hydraulic suspension below, which is what makes the load share evenly no matter how the ground dips and rises.

Axle lines and pendulum axles

Each Axle Line is one transverse row carrying four Pendulum Axle swing arms, each with a twin Wheel and Tire Set. The pendulum lets the wheels follow the ground while a Suspension Cylinder keeps each one loaded. Some hubs contain a Hub Drive with a hydraulic motor and planetary reduction for traction, while others are idle. A Steering Actuator turns each axle so the whole line can point in any direction. A 6-axle module thus has 24 pendulum axles and 48 wheels, all individually suspended and steerable.

Hydraulic suspension

The Hydraulic Suspension is the heart of an SPMT. The many suspension cylinders are grouped, through Support Group Valve units, into three hydraulic support groups. Three points define a plane, so a three-group system supports the deck statically like a three-legged stool, meaning the load is shared evenly across all wheels even when the ground is rough. Pressure Sensor feedback and Deck Tilt Sensor inclinometers let the operator raise, lower, and tilt the deck under load, which is also how cargo is lifted off and set onto its foundation by jacking the whole deck up or down.

Electronic steering

The Steering System uses a Steering Computer that solves the geometry for every wheel so they all sweep arcs about one common turn center. The operator simply picks a steering mode and a turn center; the computer commands each Steering Valve and reads back a Axle Angle Encoder on each axle. Modes include normal cornering, crab travel sideways, and carousel rotation about the center of the deck, which lets a several-hundred-tonne load be spun in place inside a tight space.

Drive and braking

Propulsion is hydrostatic. A variable Drive Pump feeds the driven hub motors through Flow Divider blocks and per-axle Drive Valve units, so flow is balanced even when some wheels are on a grade. Speed under full load is a walking pace, typically below 5 km/h, because precision matters far more than speed. Braking uses spring-applied, hydraulically released Wheel Disc Brake units at the hubs, fail-safe so the train stops if hydraulic pressure is lost.

Power, control, and coupling

A clip-on Power Pack supplies all hydraulic power from a diesel Power Pack Engine and pump bank, so the transporter modules themselves carry no engine and stay low. Everything is coordinated by the Master Controller and driven from a Walking Remote radio unit worn by the operator. The reason an SPMT scales is the Module Coupling Set: a Mechanical Coupler joins modules structurally, a Hydraulic Coupler shares hydraulic supply, and a Bus Coupler extends the control network so dozens of axle lines behave as one vehicle.

Variants and use

SPMTs are rated per axle line, commonly 30 to 48 tonnes each, and combined into configurations sized to the job. Bridge contractors roll completed spans into place overnight; shipyards move pre-outfitted hull blocks to the assembly dock; refineries and power plants set heavy vessels and generators onto their foundations. Heavy-lift contractors keep large fleets of identical modules precisely so they can be combined into whatever shape a given cargo demands, then split back into smaller jobs afterward.
