Wire Rope Electric Hoist

Product

Overview

A wire rope electric hoist is the heavy-duty lifting machine that sits at the heart of overhead cranes, gantries, and stationary hoisting stations. Where a chain hoist tops out at around five tonnes, a wire rope hoist scales from one tonne to eighty tonnes and beyond, because steel rope spooled onto a grooved drum stores far more lifting capacity in a compact package than a link chain can. The machine compresses a motor, a multi-stage gearbox, a brake, a rope drum, and the reeving into one frame that can be hung from a trolley or bolted in place.

The lifting train runs in a line: the Lift Motor turns the Reduction Gearbox, which turns the Rope Drum Unit, which spools the Lifting Wire Rope up or down. The rope ends at the Hook Block. When the hoist needs to traverse, the whole assembly hangs from a Suspension Trolley. The operator drives all of this from the Pendant Control, and the power circuits live in the Control Panel panel bolted to the Hoist Frame & Cover.

The rope drum

The Rope Drum Unit is the defining component. Its Rope Drum is a steel cylinder cut with helical grooves, usually with both a right-hand and a left-hand thread so the rope spools symmetrically from the centre outward, which keeps the hook from swinging sideways as it lifts. The grooves space the rope turns so they never rub against each other, and they hold the rope in a single layer, which roughly triples rope life compared with a smooth multi-layer drum. The drum turns on two Ball Bearing supports, the dead end of the rope is locked in by a wedge-type Rope Anchor, and a spring-loaded Rope Guide rides on the drum to force each turn into its groove even when the rope goes slack at the bottom of the lift.

Motor, gearbox and brake

The Lift Motor is typically a pole-changing motor giving a fast main speed and a slow creep speed in roughly a 6:1 ratio, with the creep speed used for precise spotting of the load. A shaft-mounted Motor Cooling Fan pulls air over the finned housing because hoist duty involves frequent starts that heat the windings. The motor feeds the Reduction Gearbox, a three-stage helical reducer running in an oil bath of Gear Oil, that drops the motor speed of around 1,400 rpm down to drum speed.

The Lift Brake is fail-safe by design. Four Coil Spring elements clamp the Brake Friction Disc whenever power is off, so the load is always held statically unless the Brake Coil is energised to pull the armature clear. A Brake Rectifier converts the AC supply to the DC the coil needs and switches it fast, so the brake sets within about a tenth of a second when the lift button is released. Sizing the brake to at least 1.6 times motor torque is a code requirement under EN 14492-2.

The reeving and hook

The Lifting Wire Rope runs from the drum down through the Hook Block and back up to a fixed anchor. The number of rope falls, 2/1 for light loads or 4/1 and 4/2 for heavy ones, sets the trade between lifting capacity and hook speed. Inside the block, grooved Rope Sheave wheels turning on Ball Bearing units route the rope, and the forged Load Hook hangs from a Hook Thrust Bearing so it can swivel freely under load and a twisted sling cannot wind up the rope. A spring Hook Safety Latch closes the hook throat, and the Block Shell cheeks protect the sheaves.

Traverse and structure

A Suspension Trolley lets the hoist move along a beam. Its Trolley Frame is adjustable to suit the flange width, four flanged Trolley Wheel units run on the beam, and a geared Travel Motor drives the powered pair. The entire machine is carried on the Machinery Base Plate plate that ties the motor, gearbox, and drum into one rigid unit, with Sheet Metal Panel covers and a Fastener Set completing the Hoist Frame & Cover.

Control and protection

The Control Panel panel holds reversing Reversing Contactor units, a logic board built on a Bare PCB with an Microcontroller, protection Relay devices, and a Control Transformer that drops the supply to a safe 48 V for the pendant. A Overload Cut-Out device reads load through a Pressure Sensor and blocks lifting above the rated capacity, protecting the rope and the supporting structure. From the Push-Button Station, the operator commands lift and travel; a Hoist Limit Switch cuts power at the ends of the lift range, and the Emergency Stop halts all motion at once.

Variants and use

Inverter-fed hoists replace the two-speed motor with a frequency drive for stepless control, soft starting, and active anti-sway. Double-rope true-vertical-lift builds keep the hook from drifting sideways during a lift, which matters for machine-tool loading. Low-headroom and monorail versions integrate the trolley to save building height. Foundry and steel-mill hoists use heat-resistant rope and grease, while offshore and crane-duty units add redundant brakes and load monitoring. The wire rope hoist underpins single- and double-girder overhead cranes, gantry cranes, jib cranes, and fixed hoisting points across nearly every heavy industry.
