Rail-Mounted Gantry Crane

Product

Overview

A rail-mounted gantry crane, or RMG, stacks shipping containers in a yard block while running on two fixed steel rails set in the ground. It is a tall steel portal that spans a block of container rows, and often a road and rail interchange beneath it, with a hoist on a trolley that runs across the top. Fixed rails are the defining trade: the crane gives up the freedom to relocate that a rubber-tired crane has, and in return it gets a precise, repeatable travel path that supports the highest stacking density and makes full automation practical. When an RMG runs without an operator it is usually called an automated stacking crane.

The Gantry Structure is the portal, the Rail Travel System system runs it along the rails, the Hoist Machinery lifts the load, the Trolley positions it across the span, the Spreader grips the box, the Power and Drive system feeds grid energy, and the Control and Automation system runs manual or automated cycles.

Structure and rail travel

The Gantry Structure is a portal of four Gantry Leg legs and two Main Girder girders, with one pair of legs rigid and the other flexible so the wide structure can absorb thermal movement of the long rails. The Rail Travel System system runs on Travel Bogie bogies carrying sixteen flanged Rail Wheel steel wheels, driven by Travel Motor motors, with Guide Roller rollers that keep the bogies centered and cut flange wear. Because the crane is exposed and tall, powered Storm Rail Clamp storm clamps grip the rail to anchor it against high wind, and Travel Buffer buffers stop it at the rail ends.

Hoist and trolley

Lifting is done by the Hoist Machinery. Variable-speed Hoist Motor motors drive a Hoist Gearbox and a pair of Rope Drum drums, which spool Wire Rope wire ropes reeved over Sheave pulleys to the spreader. A fail-safe Hoist Brake holds the load on power loss, and an Encoder reports drum rotation for height and positioning. The Trolley runs the wide girder on Trolley Wheel wheels driven by Trolley Motor motors, and a Cable Reel feeds power and signals to the trolley as it travels the span.

Spreader

The Spreader hangs from the ropes and grips a box by its corner castings using four Twistlock cones turned by Twistlock Cylinder rams. A Spreader Frame telescopes on Telescope Cylinder rams between 20 ft and 40 ft, Guide Flipper guides funnel it onto the box, and a Landing Sensor at each corner confirms seating before the locks turn. A local Spreader Power Unit unit with its own Spreader Pump supplies the spreader hydraulics, since the spreader hangs far from the machinery house.

Power and energy recovery

Running on fixed rails lets the crane draw grid power continuously through a Conductor System, a conductor rail or a motorized cable reel that tracks the crane along its runway. A Transformer matches the supply to a Drive Cabinet of Variable-Frequency Drive variable-frequency drives that control hoist, trolley, and travel. Because the crane is grid-connected, a Regenerative Unit returns energy to the grid each time a load is lowered or the trolley decelerates, so an RMG is markedly more efficient than a diesel rubber-tired crane.

Control and automation

The fixed travel path is what makes full automation practical, so the Control and Automation system is the heart of an automated stacking crane. A Crane PLC sequences every motion, an Anti-Sway System system reads a Sway Sensor to damp load swing for precise drops, and an Absolute Position System of Position Encoder encoders and a Position Tape runway tape gives the crane exact position. Stack Profile Scanner scanners map the stack and the truck lane so the crane places boxes without collision, and Load Cell sensors weigh each load. During automated operation the Operator Cab sits empty, used only for manual work and recovery, often through a remote operator station rather than the cab itself.

Use and place in the fleet

RMGs are chosen where a terminal wants maximum stacking density and automation in a fixed yard layout. They stack denser and run more cleanly than a Rubber-Tyred Gantry Crane, handle the same full boxes a Laden Container Handler does but with far higher throughput, and free the yard of the diesel and tire loads of mobile cranes. The cost is flexibility and civil works: the rails and runway are expensive to build and fix the crane to one block, so the layout cannot be changed without major work. A terminal commits to RMGs when its volumes and automation goals justify that fixed investment, and relies on rubber-tired cranes and reach stackers where adaptability matters more.
