Minibus
ProductOverview
The minibus is a passenger vehicle built on a van-derived cutaway chassis and fitted with a purpose-made passenger body. It seats sixteen riders plus the driver and serves shuttle work such as airport transfers, hotel runs, paratransit, campus loops, and feeder routes that connect to larger transit lines. The base vehicle is a Cutaway Chassis: a complete cab and engine on a Ladder Frame, supplied by a truck or van manufacturer as an incomplete vehicle. A separate body builder mounts the Passenger Body Module behind the cowl, which is why two firms appear on the certification label.
Power comes from a 3.0 L Diesel Engine driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed Automatic Transmission and a Driveline. The vehicle uses dual rear wheels to carry the loaded axle weight, and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS handle stopping. Curb weight is around 4,200 kg and the gross vehicle weight rating is 6,350 kg, which keeps the vehicle within the medium-duty class for licensing in most regions.
Cutaway chassis
The Cutaway Chassis is the structural and mechanical foundation. Two Frame Side Rail C-channels run the length of the vehicle, tied together by five bolted Crossmember units. The body sits on eight rubber Body Mount Isolator isolators that absorb frame flex and road noise before it reaches passengers. The factory Driver Cab carries the Windshield, two Cab Door assemblies, the Dashboard with its Instrument Cluster, and an air-suspended Driver Seat that reduces driver fatigue over long shifts.
Steering uses a recirculating-ball Steering Gear with hydraulic assist from a belt-driven Power Steering Pump, suited to the high front-axle loads of a forward-control layout. The Front Steer Axle is a forged I-beam steer axle carrying a Steering Knuckle at each end. Each Wheel Hub runs on a tapered roller Ball Bearing pair sealed by an Oil Seal. Fuel is stored in a 95 L Fuel Tank, and exhaust gas passes through a Diesel Particulate Filter and a SCR Catalyst fed from the DEF (AdBlue) Tank to meet emissions limits.
Engine and fuel injection
The Diesel Engine is a common-rail direct-injection inline-four. The Cylinder Block is compacted graphite iron for stiffness at high cylinder pressures, capped by an aluminium Cylinder Head with dual overhead Camshaft units operating sixteen Engine Valve units. A forged Crankshaft drives four Piston Assembly units, each combining a Piston, three Piston Ring units, and a Connecting Rod.
Fuel delivery is handled by the Common-Rail Injection, in which a High-Pressure Fuel Pump charges the Common Fuel Rail to 2,000 bar and four piezo Piezo Injector units meter the charge under Engine ECU control, with a Pressure Sensor closing the rail-pressure loop. A variable-geometry Turbocharger with an Inconel Turbine Wheel and electronically driven VGT Actuator builds boost across the rev range. The Engine Cooling System circulates coolant through the Radiator and Water Pump, with a viscous-clutch Cooling Fan and a charge-air Charge-Air Intercooler managing heat. A Timing Chain in the Timing Drive keeps the camshafts in phase.
Transmission and driveline
The Automatic Transmission is a 6-speed torque-converter automatic chosen for stop-and-go shuttle duty. A Torque Converter with a lockup clutch couples the engine to three Planetary Gearset stages, and a hydraulic Valve Body with seven Shift Solenoid units selects ratios under control of the Transmission Control Board. Engagement of each gear uses a wet Clutch Pack.
Drive reaches the rear wheels through the Propeller Shaft, which carries two Universal Joint units and a Center Support Bearing support. The Rear Drive Axle is a hypoid-geared live axle: the Differential uses a Ring & Pinion Set set and four Spider Gear units, sending torque out through two fully floating Axle Shaft units to the dual Wheel & Tire sets.
Suspension and brakes
The Suspension System uses independent front corners and a leaf-sprung rear. Each Front Suspension Corner corner has a Coil Spring, a Shock Absorber, and two Ball Joint units on stamped Control Arm links. The rear runs a multi-leaf Leaf Spring clamped by a Spring U-Bolt pair, well matched to the variable passenger load. An Anti-Roll Bar at each end limits body roll on cornering.
The Brake System is vacuum-boosted hydraulic with ABS. A Master Cylinder fed through a Vacuum Brake Booster pressurizes six Brake Corner units, each with a Brake Caliper, a vented Brake Disc, and a Wheel Speed Sensor. The ABS Hydraulic Module modulates pressure through its ABS Valve Block under ABS ECU control, and a cable Parking Brake holds the vehicle when parked.
Body, interior, and climate
The Passenger Body Module is a welded steel Body Cage Frame skinned with FRP Side Wall Panel and Roof Panel composites bonded for a watertight shell. The Floor Structure places a plywood Subfloor over steel outriggers and finishes with slip-resistant covering. A powered Passenger Entry Door driven by its Door Actuator and a fold-out Entry Step handle boarding, while eight sliding Side Window units and a Sheet Metal Panel set complete the enclosure.
Inside, sixteen Passenger Seat units each carry a Seat Belt with Belt Retractor and webbing rated to ECE R16. Riders use Grab Rail tubes, an Overhead Service Console with a Reading Light and adjustable Passenger Air Vent at each seat, and a Stop-Request System of Stop-Request Button units wired to the Stop-Request Controller. Climate comes from a front Front HVAC Unit unit and a roof-mounted Rear Roof A/C Unit with an auxiliary Heating Element, both served by a belt-driven A/C Compressor and a A/C Condenser.
Electrical system
The 12 V Electrical System system runs from a 12 V Battery charged by the Alternator, with a Starter Motor cranking the engine. A Body Control Module manages body functions through relays and the Fuse & Relay Box, distributing power across the Chassis Wiring Harness and Body Wiring Harness. Lighting is LED throughout the Exterior Lighting set, including the Headlamp and Tail Lamp units built around a LED Light Module. Each control board, from the cluster to the A/C Control Board, is built on a Bare PCB populated with an Microcontroller and SMD Passive (R/C/L), connected by Wire Bundle runs and Connector terminations, with Relay switching for high-current loads.
