Bluetooth Tracker Tag
ProductOverview
A Bluetooth tracker tag is a slim locator device pocketed on keys, attached to a child's backpack, or clipped to luggage. When separated from the owner, it broadcasts a Bluetooth signal; the owner's phone app logs nearby reception strength to estimate distance and direction. The tag also includes an acoustic homing feature, pressing the button or triggering a remote command causes the piezo speaker to beep, helping the user locate the tag by sound.
The entire device fits in a coin-cell-sized waterproof shell. Inside, a dual-radio SoC runs both BLE (for low-power continuous advertising and app connectivity) and UWB (for accurate distance and angle measurement to UWB-equipped gateways or the owner's phone). The CR2032 coin cell lasts months to years depending on advertising cadence and whether UWB ranging is active. A single user button triggers find-me sounds, and an LED indicates pairing and low-battery states.
How it works
The dual-radio SoC boots firmware from its embedded flash. At startup, the BLE modem initializes the 2.4 GHz antenna and begins sending advertisement packets (typically every 100–500 ms, selectable by the app). Each packet includes a unique identifier and optional encrypted data (e.g., battery level). The SoC's low-power modes keep the radio listening to incoming commands while consuming microamps between transmissions.
When a smartphone running the companion app comes within BLE range (~100 m), it receives these advertisements and records signal strength (RSSI). The app logs data from multiple historical positions and, using trilateration or machine learning, estimates the tag's most likely location. It displays this on a map view.
If the user presses the on-tag button, a GPIO interrupt wakes the speaker driver, which energizes the piezo piezo element for a series of pulses (e.g., 1 kHz tone, 2 seconds on/off pattern). The driver uses a simple transistor to switch current through the piezo, generating acoustic noise to draw attention.
The SoC's UWB transceiver can also be activated on demand (e.g., when the owner taps "find" in the app). UWB operates at 6 GHz with high bandwidth, allowing time-of-arrival (ToA) measurements between the tag and the phone or a mesh of fixed UWB gateways. Ranging accuracy is 10–30 cm, far better than BLE RSSI estimation, but UWB consumes more power, so it is typically used as a final homing step once the user is within ~20 m.
The main circuit board is a minimal single-layer or double-layer PCB with the SoC at center, battery contact pads on the bottom surface, and the antenna pair on the top. No external RAM, no flash chip (firmware lives on-die), no power management IC, just the SoC, a crystal for timing, and bypass capacitors. This minimalism reduces cost and size.
The coin cell is held in compression between a positive contact and a spring, allowing easy replacement. As voltage droops below ~2.7 V (roughly 10% remaining capacity), firmware flags low-battery state; the status LED blinks or the app sends a notification. Users swap the cell in seconds without tools.
The waterproof shell is molded ABS or polycarbonate with a silicone gasket that compresses between the halves. A molded keyring attachment point is integral to the design, allowing immediate deployment on keychains or bags.
