LED Television

Overview

An LED television is a flat-panel display that forms a colour image by selectively blocking light from a white LED backlight using a liquid-crystal layer. The "LED" name refers to the backlight; the image itself is produced by an LCD. This 55-inch set is a 4K smart TV, meaning it pairs the display with an onboard computer that streams content directly over the network.

Light originates in the Backlight Unit, a plane of white LEDs behind the screen. Their output passes through the Display Panel Module, an open-cell LCD stack where a grid of liquid-crystal sub-pixels twists to admit or block light, and colour filters tint each sub-pixel red, green, or blue. The brightness of each LED zone is managed by the LED Driver Board, which dims regions behind dark scenes to deepen black levels through local dimming.

How it works

The Mainboard is the brain: it carries the smart-TV SoC, runs the streaming apps and tuner, decodes incoming video, and generates the pixel data sent to the panel's timing controller. It receives signals from the IR & Button Board receiver and the bundled Remote Control.

Power conversion is handled by the Power Supply Board (SMPS), which rectifies mains AC and produces the regulated rails for the backlight LEDs and the logic boards; the backlight is the single largest power draw in the set. Sound is reproduced by the Audio System, a pair of down-firing speakers driven by an integrated amplifier.

All electronics and the panel are held by the Enclosure Assembly and shielded by the EMI Shield Can cans, which contain the high-frequency emissions of the driver electronics. A standardised Stand & VESA Mount pattern lets the set hang on a wall bracket. The combined result is a large, thin image surface that doubles as a self-contained streaming media player.
