Digital Photo Frame Product

Overview

A digital photo frame displays a rotating library of photos and short video clips on an LCD screen sized and proportioned to sit on a shelf or desk like a printed picture frame. This is a Wi-Fi model: rather than copying files onto a card by hand, the owner sends photos to it over the network from a phone app or a cloud account, and the frame downloads and queues them for the slideshow on its own. Local import over microSD Card Slot and USB still works for offline use.

The viewing surface is the Display Module, a 10.1-inch IPS LCD chosen for wide, color-stable viewing angles so the picture looks correct when seen from across a room or off to one side. An Ambient Light Sensor reads the room's brightness and dims the backlight in dim light, keeping the image from glaring at night and saving power. A Touch Digitizer bonded over the panel lets the user swipe through photos and open the menu directly on the glass, while the IR Remote does the same from a distance.

The electronics, ports and radios sit on the Mainboard, and the whole stack is held by the Enclosure — a front bezel, a rear cover, and a hinged easel stand that supports the frame in either portrait or landscape orientation.

How it works

The Mainboard is built around a media-class Compute SoC Module that decodes JPEG, HEIC and H.264 content and scales each image to the panel resolution. Firmware and the photo library live on eMMC Flash Storage storage, with DDR3 SDRAM holding the decoded frames during the slideshow transitions. A companion Microcontroller handles low-level housekeeping — power sequencing, reading the Control Button Set, and receiving infrared codes from the remote — so the main processor can stay focused on rendering.

New photos arrive through the Wi-Fi Module, which connects to the home network and pulls images pushed from the companion app or a linked cloud album; the Wi-Fi Antenna provides the radio link. Imported files are written to flash and added to the playlist. The SoC then steps through that playlist on a timer, applying fade or pan transitions between shots and driving the IPS panel and its LED backlight inside the display module. The Ambient Light Sensor feeds a light reading back to the controller, which adjusts backlight current to match the room.

Audio for video clips plays through the built-in Speaker. Power comes from the Power Input, where a 5 V adapter feeds the board through a barrel jack, and internal connections run over the Wire Bundle between the board, display and speaker.
