E-Ink Writing Device
ProductOverview
An e-ink typewriter is a writing-focused minimalist device: Keyboard Assembly with no distractions (no notifications, no internet browser, no social media). Unlike tablets or laptops, the E-Paper Panel consumes almost no power during idle, words remain visible on the screen indefinitely without battery drain. Users type into an offline text editor; the Main Board saves automatically to local Storage Module; and when WiFi is enabled, the Cloud Sync Module syncs documents in the background to Dropbox, iCloud, or a personal cloud service.
The E-Paper Display is a monochrome e-paper panel, fundamentally different from an LCD or OLED screen. Instead of constantly emitting light, e-paper uses electrophoresis: tiny charged pigment particles suspended in a thin fluid move in response to an electric field, turning pixels black or white. When power is removed, the particles stay in place, so text remains on the screen for days. This allows the device to run for weeks on a single Battery Pack charge.
The Keyboard Assembly is a full mechanical keyboard with Cherry or Gateron switches, the same type used in high-end gaming keyboards, but here repurposed for writing comfort. Each keystroke is instantaneous (no lag) and produces tactile feedback, mimicking a typewriter. The Main Board ARM SoC runs a minimal, vim-inspired editor and ships documents to the cloud with a single keystroke.
How it works
When a key is pressed, the Keyboard PCB debounces the switch signal and sends a scan code to the Microcontroller co-processor. The MCU buffers keystrokes and passes them to the Compute SoC Module main processor at 1 kHz via I2C. The main processor renders the character into a text buffer in RAM IC and notifies the Display Driver.
The driver computes a delta (difference) between the current and new frame buffers and sends only the changed pixels to the E-Paper Panel. E-paper refresh is slow (2–5 seconds for a full update) because particles must physically move. The driver applies a multi-step waveform: it first applies a strong positive voltage to drive all pixels white (clearing the page), then applies tailored voltage pulses to set each pixel to its target state. This takes 100–300 ms per full refresh but is invisible to the typist because it happens while they're reaching for the next keystroke.
Meanwhile, the main processor periodically writes the document to Storage Module (every 10 seconds or on save), ensuring the text survives a power loss. When WiFi is available, the Connectivity Module module checks for network and awakens the Cloud Sync Module. This daemon compares the local document timestamp against the cloud version, and if local is newer, it uploads a compressed diff (just the lines that changed) over HTTPS. Dropbox, Google Drive, and iCloud use OAuth for authentication, so no passwords are stored locally.
The Power Management and Battery Pack are tuned for extreme efficiency. The e-paper display draws <1 mW during idle standby (no backlight to power). The ARM SoC idles at <5 mW, with power-gating for unused cores. This permits 2–4 weeks of off-the-grid operation, or 8–12 hours of continuous typing before requiring a charge via Connectivity Module USB-C.
