Laser Distance Meter

Product

Overview

A laser distance meter (rangefinder) measures the straight-line distance from the device to a remote object by timing how long a pulse of laser light takes to bounce back. The operator points the device at a wall, tree, or other target, presses the Trigger Assembly, and the LCD Panel instantly displays the distance in meters or feet.

The device employs phase-shift laser time-of-flight measurement, a technique more accurate than simple amplitude-based detection. The Laser Module transmits a continuous infrared laser beam, not a pulse, but modulates its intensity (brightness) at a fixed radio frequency (10–100 MHz). Light bouncing off the target and returning to the Receiver Module is slightly delayed. The amount of phase shift (how much the returning wave lags behind the transmitted wave) encodes the distance: for every wavelength of the RF modulation that fits in the round-trip path, the phase advances by 360°. The Phase Processor measures this phase difference and calculates distance in real time.

The Housing Assembly is lightweight (180 g) and pocket-sized, with a Optical Window for the laser beam and a Display Module showing distance in meters or feet. Two AA batteries in the Battery Holder power the device for thousands of measurements. The Trigger Assembly fires a new measurement whenever pressed, typically completing in 200–500 ms.

How it works

When the operator presses Trigger Assembly, the Main Board MCU signals the Laser Driver to turn on the Laser Diode. This diode emits infrared light (780–905 nm), which is collimated by the Collimator Lens into a narrow beam (0.3–0.5° divergence, ~5 cm footprint at 50 m distance). The light travels to the target, scatters diffusely, and some fraction bounces back toward the device.

The returning scattered light enters the Receiver Module through the Receiver Lens Group, which focuses it onto the Avalanche Photodiode, an avalanche photodiode (APD) sensitive to single photons. The APD output is amplified by the TIA IC, a transimpedance amplifier that converts tiny currents (nanoamperes) into measurable voltages (millivolts).

Simultaneously, the PLL IC (phase-locked loop) is tracking the laser modulation frequency. It extracts a reference clock from the transmit RF modulation and compares the phase of this reference against the phase of the received signal in a mixer. The phase difference (typically 0° to 360° per RF wavelength in the round-trip distance) is fed to the Phase Processor.

The processor integrates the phase measurements over 100–1000 samples to reduce noise, then applies a model: if the round-trip distance is D and the RF modulation wavelength is λ_RF, the phase difference φ is:

φ = (4πD) / λ_RF (mod 2π)

Solving for D, the processor derives the distance. To resolve ambiguity (distance mod λ_RF), the processor uses a multi-frequency technique: it repeats the measurement at several RF frequencies, cross-correlates the phase differences, and solves for the unambiguous range.

The Main Board MCU formats the result (distance in meters or feet) and updates the LCD Panel display. Measurement-to-display latency is typically <1 second. The entire operation draws <1 W peak power, so two AA batteries sustain 10,000–50,000 measurements before depletion.

Accuracy improves with target reflectivity and ambient lighting. A white diffuse target at 10 m yields ±2 mm accuracy; dark or distant targets degrade accuracy to ±5–10 mm as returned signal photon count drops. Maximum range (≤120 m) is limited by received signal strength: only a fraction of the scattered light recollects at the APD, and weak signals drown in electrical noise.
