Portable Water Filter

Overview

The portable water filter is a hand-pumped backpacking unit that forces raw water through a hollow-fiber membrane to strain out protozoa and bacteria, delivering clean water at roughly a litre per minute. The core is a replaceable Filter Cartridge driven by a lever Hand Pump, drawing from a source through an Inlet Hose and discharging through an Outlet Hose and bottle-thread adapter. The whole kit stows in a mesh Carry Bag.

How it works

Raw water enters at the intake, where a buoyant float suspends the inlet hose mid-column away from bottom sediment and a coarse pre-filter screen blocks grit before it can reach the membrane. Stroking the Pump Handle drives a cup-sealed piston in the pump cylinder; two check valves rectify the motion, drawing water in on one stroke and pressurizing it on the next, while a coil return spring resets the piston. This pressure is what pushes water across the filter rather than relying on gravity, so flow stays high even from shallow or murky sources.

Inside the cartridge, pressurized water meets a bundle of microporous hollow fibers. Both ends of the bundle are sealed in epoxy potting so every drop is forced through the fiber walls, where pores around 0.1 micron physically block protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium along with bacteria and microplastics. An optional bonded Activated-Carbon Core then reduces chlorine, taste and odor as the water exits. The cartridge housing and threaded end caps seal on O-rings so no raw water bypasses the membrane.

Clean water leaves through the outlet hose and a Bottle Adapter that screws onto common drink bottles and hydration bladders. As fibers clog and flow drops, a Backflush Syringe pushes clean water backward through the cartridge to dislodge trapped debris and restore the original flow rate.
