Side-Loader Forklift
ProductAlso known as: side-loading forklift, sideloader
Overview
A side-loader forklift carries long loads sideways, so it can run down an aisle that is far narrower than the load is long. A normal counterbalance truck picks a load on the front and has to turn the whole load through ninety degrees to enter an aisle, which needs a wide cross aisle for anything longer than a pallet. The side-loader avoids that turn. The operator sits sideways, the mast and forks are mounted on a carriage on one side of the truck, and the load comes to rest lengthwise along a flat deck that runs the length of the machine. A 12 m length of timber or steel bar can travel an aisle barely 2 m wide.
The machine is built around the Chassis Frame, a long welded frame with a flat deck. The Mast and Reach Carriage rolls sideways across that frame on slide tracks to pick and place loads. A Powertrain built on a diesel Diesel Engine drives the truck and turns the hydraulic pump. The Hydraulic System power every working motion. The Running Gear, Load Deck and Bolster, Operator Cab, Electrical and Control system, and Safety and Visibility equipment complete the truck.
How it works
To pick a load, the operator drives alongside the rack and stops with the deck opposite the load. The Reach Cylinder pair pushes the Reach Carriage out across the deck, carrying the Lift Mast and forks toward the rack. The Lift Cylinder raises the Fork Carriage so the Load Fork tines slide under the load. With the load lifted clear, the reach cylinders pull the carriage back in, and the load lowers onto the bolsters of the Load Deck and Bolster. Now the load sits centred and low on the deck, well within the truck width, and the machine can travel the aisle safely. A Tilt Cylinder tips the carriage slightly to cradle the load during pickup, and the Side-Shift Assembly gives the operator a small lateral adjustment for lining up with a tight rack opening.
Chassis and deck
The Main Frame is a long box-section steel spine tied by Cross Member beams. A cast Counterweight sits on the aisle side to offset the load, which is cantilevered out over the rack during pickup. Two Mast Slide Track rails run across the frame, and the reach carriage rides them on Track Roller sets turning on Ball Bearing pairs. The Deck Plate forms the flat bed. Load Bolster pads lift the load clear so a sling or another fork can get under it, Side Stanchion uprights retain the load on the open side, and Deck Roller units ease loads on and off. The deck takes Sheet Metal Panel wear plates where steel or timber drags across it.
Powertrain and running gear
A heavy outdoor side-loader uses a turbocharged diesel of roughly 3.5-7 litres, built from a Cylinder Block, Cylinder Head, forged Crankshaft, Piston set, Turbocharger, and Injection Pump. Power passes through a Powershift Transmission with a Torque Converter and wet Clutch Pack units, then along the Propeller Shaft to the Drive Axle. That front axle carries a Differential and hub reductions built from Helical Gear Pair sets, feeding the Half Shaft pair. The rear Steer Axle is turned hydraulically through its Steering Knuckle and Tie Rod, driven by the Steering Cylinder. Each Wheel Assembly carries a heavy Tire, and oil-immersed Service Brake discs stop the loaded truck.
Hydraulics
The engine drives a Hydraulic Pump that delivers 80-150 l/min at around 200-250 bar. A Valve Bank of stacked Control Spool valves ports that flow to lift, reach, tilt, and side-shift, with a Relief Valve capping the pressure. Oil returns to the Hydraulic Reservoir through a Hydraulic Filter element, and the Hose Set links every cylinder. Pressure Sensor units report system and lift pressure to the controller, which uses lift pressure to weigh the load.
Cab, electrical, and safety
The Operator Cab faces sideways so the operator looks straight down the aisle at the rack and the deck. It holds a suspension Operator Seat, a Steering Column, the Control Levers for the hydraulics, an Overhead Guard, and an LCD Panel display. A Control ECU built on a Bare PCB with an Microcontroller manages engine fuelling, transmission shifts, and hydraulic interlocks, fed by a Wire Bundle harness through Relay and Connector sets. The Overload Sensor warns the operator as a lift approaches rated capacity, Limit Switch units bound the reach and lift travel, an Emergency Stop cuts power, and the Camera with its Mirror set covers the blind sides of the long load.
Variants and use
Side-loaders are sized by capacity and deck length. Yard machines carry 3-5 t on a 6-8 m deck for sawn timber and board, while heavy versions handle 8-10 t of steel bar, pipe, or extrusion on decks up to 12 m. Electric versions exist for indoor work in timber yards and steel stores, but the diesel built here suits the rough outdoor ground and long shifts of a stockholder or sawmill. The truck earns its keep wherever long stock has to be stored densely, since the narrow aisle it needs frees floor space that a counterbalance truck would waste on turning room.
