Automatic Fabric Cutting Machine
ProductOverview
An automatic fabric cutting machine cuts stacked layers of cloth into the pattern pieces that make up a garment, an airbag, a car seat cover, or any other sewn product. Instead of a worker tracing a paper pattern and cutting by hand, the machine drives a Cutting Blade along a programmed path read from a CAM marker, slicing through dozens or hundreds of plies at once. A spreading machine first lays the fabric in even layers on the table; the cutter then turns the digital nesting layout into finished pieces with consistent edges and registration marks.
The machine described here follows the layout used by industrial systems from makers such as Gerber and Lectra: a conveyorized Cutting Table, a Vacuum Hold-Down System that compacts and holds the stack, an X-Y Gantry carrying the Cutting Head, and a Control Cabinet running the cut program.
Vacuum Compression and the Bristle Bed
Loose fabric shifts under a knife, so the first job is to turn a soft pile of plies into a rigid block. A perforated Air-Permeable Overlay Film is fed over the spread, and the Blower Motor pulls air down through the table. The pressure difference squeezes the whole stack flat against the bed. The Vacuum Plenum under the table is split into zones, and each Zone Damper opens suction only beneath the area being cut, so the blower moves less air for the same hold-down force.
The table surface is not solid. It is paved with thousands of stiff nylon bristles, supplied as replaceable Bristle Bed Block segments. The bristles stand the fabric off the table and let the blade pass all the way through the bottom ply without hitting a hard surface or going dull. After the knife lifts, the bristles spring back and close the slot, keeping the bed flat for the next pass. Because the bed is air-permeable, the same bristles carry the vacuum up into the fabric. The whole bed rides on a Conveyor Belt so a long spread can be cut zone by zone: cut a section, advance the conveyor through the Conveyor Drive, cut the next.
Gantry Motion
The cutting head moves over the table on a two-axis gantry. The X Axis (Gantry Traverse) traverses the Bridge Beam along the table length, driven by two synchronized Servo Motor units on a Rack and Pinion Set so the wide bridge stays square under acceleration. The Y Axis (Head Carriage) carries the head across the bridge on a Ball Screw running between two Linear Guide Rail rails. Together the two axes place the knife anywhere over the cutting field. Power, signal, and sharpening air reach the moving head through a Cable Carrier (Energy Chain). Light extruded members and servo control let the head reach cut speeds near 100 m/min while holding position to about a tenth of a millimeter.
Reciprocating Knife and Auto-Sharpen
The Cutting Head does the actual cutting. A Knife Reciprocation Drive spins a Crank and Slider that converts rotation into fast vertical strokes, up to roughly 3500 per minute, so the straight blade saws through the compressed block rather than pushing it aside. A Vertical Lift (Z) raises the knife clear between separate pieces and plunges it to start a new contour. A Theta Rotation Axis rotates the blade so its flat always stays tangent to the path; without it, a thin straight blade would bend or tear when steered through a tight curve. A Slip Ring feeds the continuously rotating head.
Cutting many plies of synthetic or abrasive fabric dulls a blade quickly, and a dull edge frays cloth and pulls the stack out of position. The Blade Sharpener solves this by honing the blade automatically on a programmed interval. A Grinder Motor drives a Grinding Belt that a Pneumatic Cylinder presses against the blade edges for a set number of strokes, then retracts. A Presser Foot holds the top plies down where the knife enters so the surface layer does not lift.
Marking and Labeling
Cut pieces still need information for the sewing room. The Drill and Notcher unit handles internal and edge marks: a Drill Spindle pierces a small reference hole for darts and pockets, while the Notcher Unit cuts seam-alignment notches into the piece edges. The Inkjet Labeling Unit then prints a part identifier and bundle data onto each piece with its Inkjet Print Head, so operators can match pieces to the right garment and size during assembly.
Control and CAM Markers
The CNC Controller runs everything. It loads a CAM marker, the nested layout that packs pattern pieces tightly to minimize fabric waste, and converts each contour into coordinated moves of the X, Y, theta, lift, knife, and conveyor axes. Each Servo Drive closes the loop on one axis, and the Operator Console lets the operator load markers, set ply height and speed, and watch progress. A Pressure Sensor confirms vacuum is established before the knife is allowed to plunge.
Safety and Applications
A heavy gantry moving at speed over an open table needs guarding. The Safety System surrounds the work area with a Safety Light Curtain and adds a Bumper Strip on the moving bridge and several Emergency Stop Button stations; any trip drops the drive enable through the Safety Relay. These machines run throughout apparel manufacturing and in technical-textile work such as automotive interiors, airbags, upholstery, and composite reinforcement plies, anywhere stacked fabric has to be cut accurately and repeatably at volume.
