Yarn Heat-Setting Machine

Product

Overview

A yarn heat-setting machine fixes the twist and bulk of spun or twisted yarn by exposing it to controlled heat and moisture for a defined time, then cooling it under stable conditions. Twist inserted during spinning or cabling carries internal torque; without setting, the yarn snarls, kinks, and loses dimensional stability when relaxed. Heat softens the fiber polymer enough for those internal stresses to relax, and the new relaxed geometry is then frozen in place on cooling. The result is yarn that lies flat, holds its twist level, and resists pilling and untwisting in downstream weaving, tufting, and carpet manufacture.

Two main process families exist. Saturated-steam autoclave machines hold yarn packages or a continuous yarn web in a sealed chamber, evacuate the air, then inject saturated steam at a set pressure and temperature. Continuous hot-air machines pass yarn on a Conveyor Belt through a tunnel heated by electric Heating Element banks and recirculating fans. Steam setting reaches higher fixation at lower temperature because moisture plasticizes the fiber, and it suits nylon and wool carpet yarns. Hot-air setting is simpler to run continuously and suits polyester and acrylic. Many modern lines, in the style of Superba and Suessen continuous systems, combine a short steam zone with a hot-air conditioning stretch.

How it works

Yarn leaves the Yarn Infeed Creel, where each end is held on a braked Spool Holder and drawn through a disc Yarn Tensioner that sets a uniform back-tension. A Yarn Break Sensor watches every end and stops the line if one breaks. The yarn is laid onto the conveyor, which a servo-driven Drive Roller moves through the machine at a speed matched to the required dwell time.

In a steam machine the Vacuum System system runs first. A Vacuum Pump pulls the chamber down to roughly 50-100 mbar so that injected steam contacts the fiber directly instead of being blocked by trapped air; uniform contact is what gives even setting across the yarn cross-section. The Steam Generator then feeds saturated steam through the Steam Manifold, and a modulating Steam Control Valve holds the chamber at the recipe pressure. Several Pressure Sensor transmitters and zone RTD probes feed the controller, which trims steam flow and heater output to keep each zone on setpoint. Inflatable Chamber Door Seal elements close the entry and exit slots so the continuous web can pass while the chamber stays sealed.

After the hot zone the yarn enters the Cooling and Conditioning Zone zone, where axial fans and a chilled-water Cooling Coil drop the fiber temperature below its glass transition so the relaxed geometry locks in. A spray Conditioning Humidifier restores moisture lost during heating, bringing the yarn back to a stable regain before winding. The yarn then reaches the Yarn Takeup and Winding station, where a load-cell-controlled winder builds packages at constant tension.

Heating and steam supply

The Steam Generator is an electric boiler: immersion Heating Element units boil a feedwater charge inside a pressure vessel, a conductivity probe holds the water level, and a Feedwater Pump tops it up. A spring Safety Valve protects against overpressure, and lagged Steam Piping carries steam to the chamber. In hot-air mode the chamber instead relies on its own Heating Element banks and a Circulation Fan pair that drive air across the yarn at high velocity for even heat transfer.

Control and pneumatics

The Control Cabinet cabinet holds a PLC running the cycle logic, servo Servo Drive Module amplifiers for the belt, creel, and winder axes, and an Operator HMI where the operator selects yarn recipes. Recipes store temperature setpoints, steam pressure, belt speed, and vacuum depth per product. The Pneumatic System system conditions plant air and switches it through a solenoid manifold to the door cylinders, seal inflation, and process valves.

Materials

The Chamber Shell is stainless steel to resist wet steam corrosion, wrapped in mineral-wool insulation to limit heat loss and keep the housing surface safe to touch. The conveyor belt is PTFE-coated glass fiber, chosen for low yarn friction and tolerance of repeated thermal cycling. Yarn guides and eyelets are alumina ceramic to resist abrasion from continuous high-speed contact. Rollers run on sealed Ball Bearing units, and seals exposed to steam use fluoroelastomer O-Ring Set material.

Variants and use

Package autoclaves set wound packages in a batch and suit dye-house preparation and smaller runs. Continuous web machines, the focus here, run inline with cabling and feed directly into carpet tufting and weaving. Carpet yarn lines emphasize bulk development and twist retention; sewing-thread and industrial-yarn lines emphasize dimensional stability and shrinkage control. Operators tune temperature and dwell to the fiber: nylon 6 and 6,6 carpet yarn sets near 130-145 °C with steam, polyester near 180-200 °C, and wool blends at lower steam temperatures to avoid yellowing. Correct setting is judged by twist liveliness, shrinkage, and bulk, measured on sampled packages and fed back into the recipe.
