Open-End Spinning Machine

Product

Overview

An open-end, or rotor, spinning machine spins yarn directly from drawframe sliver without the roving stage that ring spinning needs. The name describes the principle: the fiber strand inside the machine has an open, free end at the rotor groove where new fibers are added and twist is inserted, rather than a continuous twisted strand running back to a supply package. This lets the machine skip the roving frame entirely, feed sliver straight from cans, twist at rotor speeds far above any spindle, and wind a large finished package in one pass. The result is much higher output per unit than ring spinning, automatic operation, and a package that needs no separate winding step. The trade is that rotor yarn is bulkier and a little weaker, and the economics favor coarse to medium counts.

Fiber enters at the Sliver Feed and Opening, is spun in the Rotor Unit, is pulled out by the Yarn Withdrawal, is wound by Package Winding, is restarted after breaks by Automatic Piecing, is powered by Drive and Vacuum, and is run by Control Electronics inside the Frame and Covers.

Sliver feed and opening

Each unit takes sliver straight from a can through a Sliver Guide. A slow fluted Feed Roller meters the sliver against a sprung Feed Plate, which pins it so the next stage can comb it. That stage is the Opening Roller, a fast roller clothed with saw-tooth wire that combs the sliver apart into individual fibers. This is the step that gives open-end spinning its name: the continuous sliver is broken back into separate fibers before being rebuilt into yarn. Dust, seed fragments and very short fibers are flung out through a Trash Channel, which is why rotor spinning tolerates shorter and dirtier stock than ring spinning.

The rotor unit

The opened fibers are carried by an air stream down a tapering Transport Channel into the Spinning Rotor, a small cup spun at up to one hundred and fifty thousand rpm inside a Rotor Housing held under vacuum. Centrifugal force throws the incoming fibers to the collecting groove at the rotor rim, where they pile up as a thin continuous ring of fiber. The yarn end already formed lies in that groove, so as the rotor spins, the rotation wraps twist into the yarn and the new fibers in the groove are caught into it. The yarn is pulled out through a Draw-off Navel, a smooth nozzle whose profile adds a controlled false twist and largely sets the yarn's surface character. The rotor turns on an Rotor Bearing, an indirect or magnetically supported bearing built to survive these speeds with low wear.

Withdrawal and clearing

The Yarn Withdrawal pulls the yarn from the rotor at a steady delivery speed. A driven Draw-off Roller and a Nip Roller roller nip the yarn for positive feed. The ratio of rotor speed to delivery speed sets the twist per unit length. Every unit has its own Yarn Clearer that measures yarn diameter continuously and flags thick places, thin places and foreign matter; on a fault it triggers a Defect Cutter that severs the yarn so the piecing robot can splice in a clean join. Because clearing is built into every unit, rotor yarn comes off the machine already cleared and does not need a separate winding-and-clearing step.

Package winding

The cleared yarn is wound directly into a large cross-wound package. A Grooved Drum both turns the package by friction and, through its helical groove, traverses the yarn back and forth across the package width. A sprung Package Cradle holds the package tube against the drum at steady pressure as it grows, a Traverse Guide guide helps lay even layers, and a Waxing Unit unit lightly coats the yarn so it unwinds smoothly in later knitting. Building the final package on the spinning machine is a major saving, since ring-spun cops must be rewound on a separate winder.

Automatic piecing

When an end breaks, the unit signals and a travelling Piecing Robot comes to it on a Linear Guide Rail rail driven by Servo Motor axes. It first runs a Rotor Cleaner to scrape and vacuum the rotor groove clean, then a Suction Arm retrieves the yarn end from the package and feeds it back into the rotor at the right instant so the groove fiber catches and spinning restarts. Automatic piecing is what lets a few hundred units run with very little labor.

Drive, vacuum and control

The Drive and Vacuum turns long rows of rotors and opening rollers with tangential Rotor Drive Belt and Opening Belt belts from Drive Motor motors, while a central Vacuum Fan holds the airflow that transports fiber and removes trash in every housing. The Control Electronics sets count, twist and speeds through an Microcontroller, a Variable Speed Drive pair, a Power Supply and the Operator Panel, gathering clearer data from every unit for quality reporting. Sliver supply sits in an Can Rack under the machine.

Yarn, variants and use

Rotor yarn is the standard for denim warp and weft, towelling, knitwear, work wear and home textiles where its bulk, evenness and good dye uptake suit the fabric and its lower cost wins. It runs most economically from about Ne 4 to Ne 40. Finer counts and the highest strength stay with ring and compact spinning, while air-jet and friction spinning serve other niches. The defining advantages of the rotor machine are the same across all its yarns: it skips the roving frame, spins far faster per unit, clears and winds in one pass, and pieces itself.
