Stenter (Tenter Frame) Product

Overview

A stenter, or tenter frame, is the workhorse of fabric finishing. It dries fabric, sets it to an exact width, fixes synthetic fibres by heat, and cures chemical finishes, all in one continuous pass. The fabric is gripped along both selvedges and carried taut through a tunnel of hot-air ovens, so it dries flat and emerges at a controlled, repeatable dimension rather than the variable size that relaxed drying would give.

The principle is in the name: the fabric is held out to width on a frame, the way old cloth was stretched on tenter hooks to dry. Modern ranges replace the hooks with two endless chains of pins or clips and replace the open air with insulated chambers of forced hot air. Holding the cloth out to width while it dries and heat-sets is what locks in the finished size and removes residual shrinkage.

How it works

Fabric enters the Entry Zone zone, where a padder applies finishing liquor, a weft straightener squares the cloth, and pinning brushes press each selvedge onto the chains. From there it rides the Pin/Clip Chains & Rails assembly: two heat-resistant chains carrying pin or clip bars run along adjustable rails, and moving the rails apart sets the stretched width. The Guider & Overfeed feeds cloth onto the pins slightly faster than the chains travel, so the fabric carries slack and can shrink in length freely, which controls lengthwise stability.

The cloth then passes through a series of Heating Chamber zones. In each, circulation blowers force air over Heating Element banks and through slotted nozzles onto both faces of the fabric, evaporating water and bringing the cloth up to its heat-set temperature. Moisture-laden air is pulled off by the Exhaust & Heat Recovery system, which routes it through a heat-recovery exchanger to preheat fresh air and cut energy use.

The chains are turned by the Main Drive, a gear-motor that sets line speed and keeps both sides synchronized. At the far end the Exit Zone zone cools the fabric off the pins on chilled cylinders and batches it into a roll. Tying it all together, the Range Control cabinet runs a stored recipe: an operator picks the fabric and finish, and the controller commands zone temperatures, line speed, width and overfeed while reading temperature and humidity sensors across the range.
