Bus Shelter

Product

Overview

A bus shelter is a simple but essential piece of street infrastructure: a three-sided structure that offers waiting passengers protection from rain, wind, and sun while maintaining clear sightlines to the street. The standard design seats 10–20 people, provides LED lighting for safety, and integrates a small power service for future digital displays or phone charging.

The Frame Structure is steel tube, typically hot-rolled and galvanized to resist rust over two decades outdoors. The Glazing Assembly uses either polycarbonate or tempered glass panels to block wind and rain without blocking the view of approaching buses. One side of the shelter is often left open for entry/exit, or doors are added to some models. The Roof Assembly is a flat or pitched steel deck with a waterproof membrane and gutters that shed rain into a sump or drainage line.

Inside, the Seating System provides hard benches, usually steel or composite, rarely padded because padding absorbs water and becomes unsightly. The Lighting System is LED, typically four or more ceiling-mounted fixtures totaling 30–50 W, powered by the Power Distribution service, which terminates in a breaker panel to allow future retrofits of displays, vending machines, or USB charging ports.

How it works

The Frame Structure is welded in the shop and then bolted to cast-in-place concrete footings at the site. The four vertical Support Post support horizontal Horizontal Beam that form the roof edge and internal bracing. Corner Gusset stiffen the corners against lateral wind load. Wind loading is the primary design driver: a shelter in an open plaza can experience sustained 40–60 mph winds, requiring conservative bracing.

The Glazing Assembly is a secondary envelope. Twin-wall polycarbonate is preferred in colder climates because it provides insulation and is nearly unbreakable. Tempered glass is used in upscale areas or where visibility and aesthetics dominate. All panels are held in an anodized aluminum frame Glazing Frame with silicone gaskets Glazing Seal Kit sealing the edges. At least one entry usually has a Entry Door with a latch to allow the shelter to be locked at night.

The Roof Assembly slopes at 1/12 or 2/12 pitch to shed water quickly. The deck is welded steel, and the Roofing Membrane is typically EPDM or TPO, both of which last 15–20 years. The Gutter and Downspout direct water to a sump or to an underground storm drain connection.

Thermal comfort is limited: these are not heated or air-conditioned spaces. However, passive Ventilation System through louvers prevents the buildup of stale air and moisture. In warm climates, an exhaust fan is added and controlled by a thermostat. In winter, ventilation is passive through openings; the space does not stay warm because wind constantly flows through the open sides.

The Power Distribution service is typically 200 A single-phase, 120/240 V, fed from the nearest utility line or a nearby power cabinet. A Main Breaker and Distribution Panel are mounted in a Electrical Enclosure, and circuits are available for Lighting System and future equipment. The Lighting System uses LED panel lights or strip lights mounted on the ceiling or high on the walls, providing 50–100 lux of illumination at the seating surface for safety and visibility.

Maintenance is straightforward: graffiti removal, panel cleaning (to maintain visibility), and annual inspection of structural bolts and weatherseals. The Glazing Seal Kit and Roofing Membrane require replacement every 15–20 years. Most shelters are refurbished every 10–15 years with new paint, new benches, and upgraded lighting, extending their serviceable life to 30+ years.
