An acoustic banner hoist is a motorized lifting system for sound-absorbing fabric panels used in theaters, concert halls, and multipurpose venues to dynamically tune room acoustics during performance. Rather than having fixed permanent acoustic treatments (which would damp all performances equally), venues deploy acoustic banners that can be raised (to reveal hard reflecting surfaces for bright, lively acoustics) or lowered (to cover reflections and absorb reverberation for intimate scenes). A typical installation involves three independent banners, each suspended from the fly loft grid and raised or lowered by independent drum-and-cable systems, all driven by a single variable-speed motor through a multi-output gearbox.
The system enables a production's sound engineer to adjust room acoustics on a cue-by-cue basis: lower the banners during a quiet dramatic monologue to reduce reverberation and focus the audience on the actor's voice; raise them during a rock-music number to let the orchestra's bright energy fill the room. This level of acoustic control was previously impossible without manual crew repositioning of heavy panels between scenes.
System Architecture
The Motor & Gearbox Unit consists of:
- A Servo Motor (3–5 kW, variable-speed AC motor)
- A Triple-Output Gearbox (planetary reducer with three synchronized output shafts, 50:1–100:1 ratio)
- An Shaft Coupler (flexible shaft coupler) absorbing torsional shock
The key design is the triple-output gearbox: all three output shafts rotate in perfect synchronization. This ensures that all three banners rise and fall together at the same speed, maintaining level alignment even if banner weights differ slightly. If the gearbox had individual friction drive wheels (as in some older designs), speed differences would cause one banner to rise faster than others, creating a visible tilt.
Each output shaft drives an independent Banner Cable Drum (grooved steel spool). The Wire Rope (8–12 mm wire rope) winds onto the spool, pulling the banner upward. The three Banner Cable & Attachment lines are independent: if one rope breaks (rare, but possible), the other two banners remain suspended and the system can still be manually lowered via the hand-crank backup.
Load & Cable Management
Each acoustic banner typically weighs 200–600 kg depending on fabric type and frame construction:
- Fabric: Cotton or wool blend, typically 3–6 m² area
- Frame: Lightweight aluminum or steel perimeter frame, ~40 kg
- Attachment hardware: Spreader bars and rope attachments, ~10 kg
The Banner Attachment Spreader spreader bar distributes the rope load across the full width of the banner (rather than concentrating it at two points), preventing the banner from sagging or tilting as it rises. Multiple attachment points along the spreader prevent the banner from twisting en route.
The Wire Rope (8–12 mm 6×19 galvanized) is rated for 2–4 tons working load, providing a 4:1 safety factor against a 600 kg banner. The rope terminations are Rope Termination (swaged or crimped eye loops) rated for 100% of rope strength, ensuring no weak points.
Safety & Brake System
The Multi-Channel Safety Brake uses a spring-applied design with a single solenoid controlling all three drums:
When the motor is powered and the operator commands "raise," the Brake Release Solenoid energizes, pulling a shared linkage that retracts the spring pressure on all three Brake Pad assemblies simultaneously. All three Brake Friction Drum surfaces are released, and the banners rise under motor power.
When the operator releases the up button (or presses emergency stop), the solenoid de-energizes immediately. The Brake Spring (pre-loaded with sufficient torque to hold 1800 kg against gravity) re-applies pressure to all three brake pads. The banners stop and hold at their current height without any further motor power. This failsafe design, load-holding springs, not motor friction, ensures that power loss or control failure cannot result in uncontrolled descent.
Electrical Control & Coordination
The Electrical Control System PLC coordinates the three drums and enforces safe operation:
The Motor Servo Drive (variable-frequency drive or proportional servo amplifier) accepts a 0–10 V speed command from the Control Pendant (wireless or hardwired control). As the operator adjusts the speed dial (0–100%), the motor accelerates smoothly from 0 to full speed, raising the banners at a comfortable visual pace (0.2–1 m/min is typical, slow enough that the audience doesn't perceive jerky motion).
The PLC monitors motor current continuously. If any banner encounters an obstruction (e.g., a catwalk, rigging cable, or set piece in its path), motor current spikes. The PLC detects this within 200 ms and shuts off the motor, holding the banners at the obstruction point. The operator can then manually lower via the hand-crank backup while crew clears the obstruction.
Emergency Manual Descent
The Manual Emergency Descent Crank provides a completely independent mechanical backup: if the motor loses power or the solenoid fails, two crew members can manually crank the Crank Handle to slowly lower all three banners. A Crank Worm Gearbox (40:1 or 50:1 worm reducer) provides mechanical advantage, allowing two people to overcome the 1800 kg gravity load. Descent time is approximately 5–10 minutes for a full 8 m raise.
A Crank Clutch (one-way roller clutch) automatically disengages the hand crank when the motor is powered (preventing interference) and re-engages if the motor stops.
Acoustic Banner Design Considerations
Absorption Spectrum: Acoustic fabric effectiveness varies by frequency. Mid-range and high-frequency sound (1–8 kHz, where most intelligible speech and musical detail resides) is readily absorbed. Low-frequency sound (50–200 Hz, producing booming bass and reverb tail) is much harder to absorb because fabric fibers must be very thick (40+ mm) to trap long-wavelength sound. Professional installations often pair fabric banners (for mid/high absorption) with bass traps (thick rigid foam or fiberglass blocks) to achieve full-spectrum acoustical control.
Deployment Strategy: The three banners are typically hung at different stage positions:
- Upstage banner: Reduces reverberation from the back wall and ceiling, bringing the acoustic space closer around actors
- Mid-stage banner: Controls reflections from the central rigging grid
- Downstage banner: Can be used selectively during dialogue-heavy scenes or lowered for full-orchestra musical numbers
A sound engineer might program cues: "Banners 1 and 3 down, banner 2 up" for a quiet dramatic scene, or "all banners up" for a full orchestra entrance.
Fabric Choices:
- Cotton velour: Good absorption (NRC 0.75–0.85), natural appearance, washable
- Wool blend: Excellent absorption (NRC 0.80–0.90), sound doesn't travel through fabric
- Vinyl-backed: Reduces absorption to rear side (prevents stage-crew noise leaking into audience)
Maintenance & Inspection
The Ball Bearing pairs in each drum shaft should be visually inspected biannually and relubricated with synthetic grease annually. The Wire Rope (wire rope) must be visually inspected before each show (looking for fraying, corrosion, or kinks) and professionally NDT-inspected annually. Rope life is typically 3–5 years with proper care.
The Brake Pad friction material wears gradually; pads should be replaced every 2–3 years or after 5000+ raise/lower cycles. The Brake Spring should be tested annually: the operator commands "lower" and holds the pendant button for 30 seconds while the banners are stationary, verifying the motor is powered but banners do not lower (confirming brake still holds). Any creep (banner descending even 10 cm) indicates brake pad wear and requires immediate replacement.
The Triple-Output Gearbox requires no routine maintenance beyond annual oil inspection (checking oil level and color). If oil appears milky or has a burnt smell, the gearbox has been overheated (usually due to extended continuous operation at full speed) and should be serviced.
All fasteners connecting the Motor Mount Frame to the rigging grid should be re-torqued annually. Stage vibration from music, acoustical shock, and thermal cycling can loosen fasteners over time, leading to excessive vibration and noise.
