Smart Bench Product
Overview
A smart bench is a solar-powered seating station that doubles as a public charging hub. Deployed in parks, plazas, and transit stations, the bench provides comfortable rest while enabling smartphone and wearable charging through USB and wireless Qi technology. An integrated sensor suite monitors the local environment—temperature, humidity, air quality, motion—and transmits the data to a city dashboard so municipalities understand pedestrian activity and microclimate conditions.
The Seating Structure is the foundation: a sturdy steel frame with hardwood or composite slats, designed for long outdoor life and easy maintenance. Above the seating is the Solar Canopy, a rack of photovoltaic panels that provides shade while generating power. The PV output charges the Battery Pack, which stores energy for nighttime and cloudy-day use.
The Charging System is what users see and interact with. Two USB ports (USB-A and USB-C) are mounted on the armrests, and a Qi charging pad is built into the seat back for wireless charging of compatible phones. All outputs are current-limited and protected against shorts. The Sensor Array measures air quality, occupancy, temperature, and humidity, feeding data through the Master Controller to a cloud backend via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
How it works
During daylight, the Solar Canopy absorbs sunlight through its monocrystalline cells. The MPPT Regulator tracks the maximum power point, adjusting the electrical load moment-to-moment to extract every watt. At peak noon on a clear day, a 200 W array will supply 150–180 W to the Battery Pack, fast-charging the lithium cells. The BMS Board inside the battery pack manages individual cell voltages, temperature, and current limits, preventing overcharge and extending battery life to 8–12 years.
When a user plugs in a phone, the Charging System detects the load and regulates the output voltage and current. USB-A and USB-C ports supply 5 V at up to 2.1 A. If the battery has dropped below a critical threshold and there is no sun, the bench enters a reduced-power mode: the Bluetooth beacon still broadcasts the bench location and state (open/full/offline) for a mobile app, but the USB outputs are disabled until solar recharges the battery.
The Sensor Array is always on. The Temperature Sensor and Humidity Sensor sample air conditions every minute. The Motion Sensor detects occupancy: if someone sits down, a timer starts; when they leave, the system logs the dwell time. The Air Quality Sensor measures volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and particulate matter (PM2.5), contributing to the city's air quality network. All sensor data is buffered locally in the Master Controller and uploaded whenever the bench has network connectivity, either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth gateway to a nearby access point.
Thermal management is critical. During hot summer afternoons, solar panels and power electronics generate considerable heat. The Electronics Enclosure has louvered ventilation grilles that allow passive convection, and the Master Controller monitors internal temperature. If the enclosure temperature exceeds 60°C, the charger reduces output current to keep the electronics within safe limits. In winter, passive heat from the charging load helps maintain battery performance above freezing.
The bench is designed for vandalism and weather resistance. The Seating Structure is hot-dip galvanized, and all fasteners are stainless steel. The USB ports are rated IP65 with gaskets against water intrusion. The Electronics Enclosure is either powder-coated steel or marine-grade aluminum, typically repainted or refreshed every 3–5 years as part of city maintenance.
