Composite Kayak

Product

Overview

A composite sea kayak is a long, narrow paddled craft built for open-water touring and multi-day expeditions. Its hull and deck are molded from glass and aramid (Kevlar) cloth laminated with epoxy resin over a foam core, producing a shell that is far stiffer and lighter than rotomolded polyethylene. Length and a narrow beam give the boat speed and straight-line tracking, while two sealed bulkheads divide the interior into a paddler's cockpit and watertight storage compartments that provide reserve buoyancy if the cockpit floods.

The boat is two laminated shells bonded together. The Hull forms the lower wetted body and carries the load, while the Deck caps it; the two are joined along the sheerline with Seam Tape. The paddler sits in the Cockpit Assembly, braced by the Seat Assembly and the under-deck thigh braces for control. Course is held with the Rudder Assembly, a drop-down stern blade worked by foot pedals. The Deck Rigging secures gear and provides perimeter safety lines, and paired Hatch Assembly units seal the stowage compartments.

Construction

The shells are laid up in a polished female mold. A pigmented gelcoat is sprayed first to form the outer finish, then alternating plies of fiberglass and Kevlar are wetted out with epoxy, with a closed-cell foam core sandwiched into the larger panels to add bending stiffness without weight. The layup is vacuum-bagged to compact the laminate and draw off excess resin, then cured. Hull and deck are released, trimmed, and joined; an internal fillet of resin and the bonded seam tape complete the hull-deck joint. The forward and aft bulkheads are bonded in to create the sealed compartments, the cockpit coaming is laminated to the deck, and the rudder, hatches, deck lines, carry toggles and drain plug are fitted as the final outfitting stage.
