Canal Narrowboat

Product

Overview

A narrowboat is a steel boat built to one dominant constraint: the locks and bridge holes of the British canal network are about seven feet wide, so the boat must be under 6 feet 10 inches in beam to pass through them. That single dimension forces the whole design. To carry useful accommodation the boat grows in length instead of width, producing the type's defining shape, a steel tube up to 70 feet long but barely wider than a corridor. Everything aboard is arranged in a single-file line along that corridor.

Speed is not the point. Canals carry a 4 mph limit and the boat displaces water rather than planing, so a modest Diesel Engine is enough. The value is in a self-contained steel home that can cruise the canal system for months. The boat is a welded Steel Hull with a Cabin Superstructure on top, an inboard diesel Diesel Engine feeding a Drivetrain and Tiller Steering, and the domestic systems of a small house: Electrical System, Water System, Heating System, and a fitted Interior Fitout, plus Deck Fittings for mooring.

Steel Hull

The Steel Hull is welded from steel plate of graduated thickness: a heavy 10 mm Steel Baseplate, 6 mm Hull Side Plate plates, and thinner cabin steel above. The thick baseplate doubles as ballast, sitting the boat low and stable, and it survives decades of sitting on canal bottoms and grounding on silt. At the stern the Swim tapers the underwater shape to feed clean water to the propeller, and the Uxter Plate forms the counter above it. The bluff Bow Plate gives the bow its characteristic curve. A welded Rubbing Strake takes the constant knocks against lock walls, and the underwater steel is protected by bituminous Hull Blacking that is reapplied every few years when the boat is taken out of the water.

Cabin and Insulation

The Cabin Superstructure is welded from 4 mm Cabin Side plate with a cambered Cabin Roof. Because steel conducts heat and sweats with condensation, the inside is lined with sprayed Spray Foam Insulation before any joinery goes in. Light comes through Cabin Window units and drop-down Side Hatch panels, and access is through Bow Doors at the front and Stern Doors by the steering position. The exterior is finished in hard-wearing Coachpaint, traditionally in deep colours with hand-painted detailing.

Engine and Drivetrain

The Diesel Engine is a small marinised diesel, typically three cylinders of 1.5 to 2.5 litres. It runs a cast-iron Engine Block with a Cylinder Head, Crankshaft, and Piston & Rod set, fed by a mechanical Injection Pump and Diesel Injector units. Canals have no flowing cooling water at the surface, so the engine sheds heat through a Heat Exchanger tied to a skin tank welded into the hull side. Two Alternator units charge both the engine and the domestic batteries, since the engine is the main charging source on most boats.

Drive runs through the Drivetrain: a mechanical Marine Gearbox with a Helical Gear Pair reduction selects ahead and astern, a flexible Shaft Coupling connects to the Propeller Shaft, and the shaft passes through the hull in a Stern Tube sealed by a Stern Gland. A three-blade bronze Bronze Propeller pushes the boat at canal speeds. Steering is by tiller: a balanced steel Rudder Blade on a Rudder Stock, supported below by a Skeg, is swung by a long swan-neck Tiller Arm that the steerer holds while standing on the stern deck.

Electrical System

Away from shore power for weeks, the Electrical System system runs on a bank of Leisure Battery units charged by the engine alternators and roof Solar Panel modules, kept separate from the Starter Battery so the engine always starts. A Inverter supplies 230 V AC for household appliances, distribution runs through a Consumer Unit with Circuit Breaker protection, and a Battery Monitor on an LCD Panel tracks state of charge, which is the number that governs daily life aboard.

Water and Heating

The Water System draws from an integral Fresh Water Tank in the bow, pressurised by a Pressure Pump smoothed by an Accumulator. Hot water comes from a Calorifier heated two ways: a Heating Coil carrying engine coolant warms it underway, and a Heating Element warms it on shore power. A Cassette Toilet handles waste with a removable tank.

Heating is central to liveaboard comfort. A cast-iron Solid-Fuel Stove burning coal or wood, vented through a Flue, is the traditional heart of the boat and runs without any electrical draw. A Diesel Heater supplements it with hydronic central heating: a Burner Unit heats coolant that a Circulation Pump sends to Radiator units along the cabin.

Interior and Deck

The Interior Fitout is fitted out like a long, narrow apartment. The galley has Galley Units, an LPG Gas Cooker with a Hob Grate, and a 12-volt Compressor Fridge. The living space holds upholstered Saloon Seating and a Berth, all built into hardwood-faced Cabin Joinery over timber Flooring. Because the boat is so narrow, the layout is a single through-route from one end to the other, with each zone, galley, saloon, bedroom, bathroom, placed in sequence.

The Deck Fittings suit canal cruising. Boats often moor to the bank using steel Mooring Pin stakes and welded T-Stud / Dolly studs rather than to dock cleats, Fender units cushion the constant contact with locks and other boats, a Tunnel Light lights the way through long unlit canal tunnels, and a Horn signals at blind bridge holes.

A fitted-out narrowboat typically sells for £40,000 to £150,000 depending on length and quality of the joinery. Its enduring appeal is the combination of a near-indestructible steel hull and a complete, warm home that fits through a seven-foot lock.
