Marine Deck Winch Product

Overview

A marine deck winch is the powered machine a ship uses to handle heavy lines: hauling in mooring ropes, recovering tow wires, or warping the vessel along a quay. It must develop large, controllable pull, hold that load reliably once the line is fast, and survive a wet, salty, shock-loaded life on an open deck. The design balances those needs around a geared drum driven by a single motor.

At its heart is the Drum & Warping Head, a grooved storage drum with a Warping Head on one end, both turning on a common spindle. A Drive Motor supplies the torque, multiplied by the Reduction Gearbox down to the slow drum speed. The Brake & Clutch holds or releases the load, and a Spooling Gear level-wind lays the wire evenly. The whole machine bolts to the deck on a Mounting Base, runs from a Control System panel and remote, and is kept watertight by the Seal Set.

How it works

When the operator commands a haul, the motor drives through the gearbox into the drum, winding the line on under tension. The reduction is large because the motor turns fast at modest torque while the drum must turn slowly at very high torque; three gear stages bridge that gap. As the wire comes in, the level-wind leadscrew traverses a fairlead back and forth across the drum so the wire stacks in even layers instead of piling up at one end, which would jam and chafe it.

Holding and releasing load is the other half of the job. A spring-applied disc brake on the input shaft sets automatically whenever power is removed, so the drum cannot run away; a band brake on the drum flange adds holding capacity for a moored line. To pay out under control, the operator eases the band brake and lets the line render against the friction. A jaw clutch can free the drum from the gear train so a line can be hauled by hand on the warping head, and the Control System system runs all of this from a deck panel or a wireless Wireless Remote so the operator can stand clear of the bight.
