Car Carrier Ship

Overview

A pure car and truck carrier carries one kind of cargo, vehicles, and is shaped entirely around that. It is a tall slab-sided box with around a dozen Vehicle Decks stacked close together, loaded through a heavy Stern Quarter Ramp and worked by drivers who park each car a few centimetres from the next. Capacity is measured in car-equivalent units, and a mid-size PCTC holds around 6,500. The cargo is light for its volume, so a car carrier is enormous in enclosed space but modest in deadweight. It is driven by twin medium-speed Medium-Speed Main Engines on a fast liner schedule, and the hull comes from around 48 prefabricated Hull Blocks.

A light ship with a tall hull

A car carrier looks unlike any other merchant ship: a featureless steel slab, often 30 m or more high above the waterline, with the Deckhouse perched forward over the bow so the bridge can see ahead over the cargo block. Because cars weigh little per unit of deck area, the Deck Plate is the thinnest of any cargo ship and the Deck Pillars are slender, set to leave clear parking lanes. The design challenge is the opposite of a tanker: not deadweight strength but stiffness and buckling control in a tall, lightly loaded box, and stability with a high centre of gravity. The flat sides give a huge windage area, which makes the ship sensitive to crosswinds when berthing.

Decks and hoistable panels

Each Vehicle Deck packs cars in painted lanes set out by Deck Marking, with Lashing Points on a dense grid so every car can be tied down with four lashings against ship motion. A PCTC carries hundreds of thousands of lashing pots. Several decks are hoistable: Hoistable Deck Gear chain gear raises a deck panel to clear vans, buses or high-and-heavy plant, then lowers it again so cars can pack two-high in the same volume. This flexibility lets one ship carry small cars on one voyage and tractors or excavators on the next, matching the deck height to the cargo mix.

Ramps and access

The cargo comes aboard through the Ramp & Access System. The main route is the heavy Stern Quarter Ramp, an angled quarter ramp rated for the heaviest high-and-heavy units, its Ramp Girders carrying the bending load and a Ramp Flap toe bridging the gap to the quay. A lighter Side Ramp runs in parallel for fast car loading, and inside the ship Internal Ramps link the decks so traffic drives through without lifts. Loading thousands of cars at speed is the whole economic point: a PCTC can load and discharge in hours, and a large terminal turns a ship around in a single shift. All of this runs on hydraulics from Ramp Hydraulic Power Pack power packs.

Doors and ventilation

Like any open-deck ship, the car decks are sealed at sea by a Watertight Door System of stern and side closures clamped by Door Cleats against Door Seals, with a Door Indicator confirming closure on the bridge before sailing, the post-Estonia SOLAS requirement. With cars idling on a dozen decks during loading, the Deck Ventilation System has a heavy job: Ventilation Fans sized for many air changes an hour clear the exhaust, watched by Gas Detectors for carbon monoxide and fuel vapour.

Fire safety

Fire is the defining hazard of a modern car carrier. A deck of vehicles parked bumper to bumper offers little chance to fight a fire by hand, and the rise of electric vehicles has added the risk of a lithium-battery fire that reignites and resists water. The Fire Safety System blankets the decks with a Drencher Nozzle deluge fed by Drencher Pumps, opened zone by zone through Drencher Section Valves, and backed by Fire Detectors and Fire Dampers. Several high-profile PCTC fires in recent years have pushed operators and class societies toward better detection, EV-specific procedures and faster deluge response.

Propulsion and manoeuvring

The trade is liner shipping with fixed schedules, so the ship is built for steady speed and frequent berthing. Twin medium-speed Medium-Speed Main Engines drive through reduction gears to a Controllable-Pitch Propeller controllable-pitch propeller, giving thrust control and reverse without stopping the engine. Each Cylinder Unit runs a Piston in a Cylinder Liner under a Cylinder Head, fed by the Fuel Injection System. Power passes through the Shaft Line to the propeller, steered by a high-lift Rudder. Twin Bow Thrusters are essential: the tall flat hull catches the wind, so good thruster power is what lets the ship hold a berth in a breeze.

Accommodation and systems

The crew of around 25 lives in the forward Deckhouse, in Crew Cabins served by an HVAC Plant, with the Bridge Console showing ramp and door status alongside navigation, and a Lifeboat Station meeting SOLAS. Three Auxiliary Gensets carry the electrical load of ramps, ventilation and thrusters. A PCTC is a specialist: it does one job, moving finished vehicles between assembly plants and markets, faster and at lower handling cost than any container or RoRo alternative.
