Cutter Suction Dredger Product

Overview

A cutter suction dredger is a floating excavation plant that does two jobs at once: it loosens the seabed with a rotating cutter and sucks the resulting slurry through a pump up a discharge pipeline to a disposal or reclamation site. Unlike a self-propelled trailing dredger, it stays put while it works, held in place by vertical steel spuds, and excavates in an arc by swinging on anchor wires.

The plant is built on a steel Pontoon Hull & Spuds whose spuds pin it to the bed. A Cutter Head & Ladder crown turns on the end of a pivoting ladder, breaking up sand, clay or soft rock. The loosened material is drawn through the Dredge Pump, a heavy centrifugal pump lined to survive abrasive slurry. Power comes from the engine-room Main Diesel Engine and a separate Diesel Generator feeding the electric cutter, Dredge Winch and pump motors. The slurry leaves through the floating Discharge Pipeline; Swing & Hoist Hydraulics raise the ladder and walk the spuds; and the whole process is steered from the Control Cabin.

How it works

To dig, the operator lowers the ladder so the cutter meets the bed, then swings the dredger left and right about one spud by hauling alternately on the port and starboard anchor winches. The cutter teeth shear the material into a loosened heap right in front of the suction mouth. The dredge pump pulls that mixture of water and solids up the ladder pipe and forces it down the discharge line; keeping the slurry moving fast enough to stay suspended, without overloading the pump, is the core of the operator's job.

Advance is a walking motion on the spuds. One spud carries the load while the other lifts; the Spud Carriage slides the dredger forward a set step, the spuds swap roles, and the cut resumes a little further on. The Control Cabin console shows pump pressure, slurry density and ladder depth, and drives the swing winches and hydraulics so one operator can run the whole excavation and pumping cycle.
