Bass Fishing Boat

Overview

A bass boat is a small, fast freshwater boat built around one purpose: covering water quickly between fishing spots and then holding a steady, low-profile casting platform once there. The layout is unmistakable. Flat raised decks run across the bow and stern, the cockpit and console sit low in between, and a large outboard hangs off a reinforced transom. Lengths run 17 to 21 feet with beams around 90 to 96 inches. Hulls are fiberglass with a shallow modified-V that lets the boat plane in skinny water yet stay controllable at 60 to 75 mph.

The boat carries two propulsion systems for two jobs. The gasoline Outboard Motor moves the boat between fishing areas at planing speed. The electric Bow Trolling Motor at the bow provides quiet, precise positioning while fishing. The rest of the boat supports those two systems and the angler: a Fuel System, a deep-cycle Electrical System bank, sonar Fishing Electronics, an aerated Livewell System, hydraulic Steering System, and pedestal Seating & Pedestals.

Hull and Deck

The Fiberglass Hull is a hand-laid fiberglass and vinylester laminate over a foam Foam Stringer Grid that runs the length of the bottom. The stringers carry the bending loads from wave impact at speed and from the outboard's thrust, which enters the structure through a composite-cored Transom Core. Bass boats run at high speeds for their size, so the bottom is shaped with a defined Keel & Strakes arrangement: a center keel for tracking plus lifting strakes that break water free of the hull to reduce wetted area on plane. Closed-cell Flotation Foam is poured into the cavities, giving level positive flotation so the boat floats upright even when swamped.

The Deck & Casting Platforms is a single molded Deck Cap Molding bonded to the hull at the Rub Rail. The two raised Casting Deck platforms give the angler an elevated, snag-free area to stand and cast. Below them sit lockable storage: an in-deck Rod Locker long enough for 7 to 8 foot rods, plus gasketed Storage Hatch compartments on stainless Deck Hatch Hinge hardware for tackle and gear.

Outboard Power

The Outboard Motor is a four-stroke marine engine in the 150 to 250 hp class. The Powerhead is a marine-spec block with an aluminum Engine Block, a Cylinder Head carrying the valvetrain, a forged Crankshaft, and electronically controlled Fuel Injector units feeding each cylinder. Power runs down the Midsection & Exhaust driveshaft housing, which also routes exhaust out through the propeller hub, to the submerged Lower Unit (Gearcase). There a Helical Gear Pair turns the vertical driveshaft 90 degrees onto the Propeller Shaft, and an integral Raw-Water Impeller Pump with a rubber impeller pulls cooling water up through the engine.

Engine angle is managed by the Power Tilt & Trim unit. A reversible Trim Pump drives a pair of Trim Cylinder rams that trim the bow up for top speed or tilt the whole engine clear of the water for trailering and shallow running. A three-blade stainless Stainless Propeller grips the water at high rpm without flexing.

Trolling Motor

The Bow Trolling Motor is the boat's slow-speed positioning system. The sealed Trolling Motor Head holds a brushless motor with a Stator Assembly and Rotor Assembly plus a control board built on a Bare PCB and an Microcontroller that runs GPS spot-lock: the motor reads its position and holds the boat over a target spot against wind and current without an anchor. A composite Composite Shaft drops the weedless Weedless Propeller below the bow, and a Quick-Release Mount lets the unit stow on deck for travel. The angler steers it with a wired Foot Pedal Control, keeping both hands free for the rod.

Electrical and Fuel

Because the trolling motor and electronics draw heavy current, the Electrical System system separates starting from house loads. A single AGM Cranking Battery starts the outboard, while three Deep-Cycle Battery deep-cycle units wired in series form the 36 V trolling bank. A multi-bank Onboard Charger tops all of them up from shore power, and a Battery Selector Switch isolates banks so a flat trolling bank can never strand the angler with a dead starting battery.

The Fuel System centers on a below-deck welded Aluminum Fuel Tank of 30 to 55 gallons. Fuel passes through a spin-on Water-Separating Filter that separates water before it reaches the injectors, and a Anti-Siphon Valve valve at the tank pickup prevents fuel from draining out in a rollover.

Fishing Systems

The Fishing Electronics suite usually runs two displays, one at the bow and one at the console, each a Sonar/GPS Display combining sonar and chartplotter on an LCD Panel. Hull-mounted Sonar Transducer units paint the bottom, structure, and fish, while an external GPS Antenna feeds position data to both the plotter and the trolling motor's spot-lock.

The Livewell System keeps caught fish alive for catch-and-release tournaments. Insulated Livewell Tank wells are fed by submersible Aerator Pump units and a closed-loop Recirculation Pump, with Aerator Spray Head nozzles oxygenating the water and Fill/Drain Valve fittings controlling fill and drain.

Handling and Layout

Steering is hydraulic. A dash Hydraulic Helm Pump turned by the Steering Wheel pushes fluid through hydraulic hose to a Steering Cylinder on the engine's tilt tube, giving fingertip control of a heavy high-thrust outboard at speed. The Seating & Pedestals uses removable Fishing Seat units on adjustable Seat Pedestal posts that drop into flush Deck Seat Base mounts on the casting decks, so seats can be moved or removed entirely to clear the deck for fishing.

A rigged bass boat sells for roughly $30,000 to $90,000 depending on length, engine size, and electronics. The combination of a fast planing hull, a heavy outboard, and a precise electric bow motor is what defines the type and separates it from general-purpose runabouts.
