Sea Kayak

Overview

A sea kayak is a long, narrow, decked paddle craft designed to carry one paddler and several days of gear across open water. The defining traits are length and a low, fine bow: at around 5.3 m and 0.55 m of beam, the boat holds a straight course and carries its speed between strokes far better than a short recreational kayak. The paddler sits low inside a closed hull, sealed against waves by a spray skirt that bridges the body and the cockpit rim, so the boat can be paddled in conditions that would swamp an open craft.

The hull splits into a small number of major groups. The Hull and Deck are the two molded shells that form the body. Inside, the Cockpit Assembly and Seat Assembly hold the paddler in firm contact with the boat, while the Skeg Assembly trims the boat against the wind. The Bulkhead Set divides the interior into sealed compartments reached through the Hatch Assembly hatches, and the Deck Rigging and End Fittings handle stowage, towing and carrying. A two-piece Paddle drives the boat.

Hull and deck

The two shells are the structure of the boat. On a plastic kayak the Hull Shell and Deck Shell are rotationally molded from high-density polyethylene powder fused inside a heated aluminum tool, which gives a tough, abrasion-resistant body at low cost. On a composite kayak the same shapes are laminated from glass or aramid cloth in epoxy, cutting the weight by a third. The two halves are joined along the sheer line with Seam Tape, an internal taped seam on composite boats or a welded and overlapped joint on plastic ones.

The underwater shape decides how the boat behaves. A shallow V or a soft chine gives the hull initial stability when sitting flat and secondary stability when the paddler edges it over to turn. A Keel Wear Strip runs along the keel line to take the wear of dragging the boat up beaches and ramps. Inside the plastic hull, Foam Pillar supports run between hull and deck to stop the large unsupported panels from oil-canning and to add buoyancy if the boat floods.

Cockpit and seating

Boat control in a sea kayak comes from connection, not just from the paddle. The Cockpit Assembly builds three contact points around the paddler. The Foot Pedal pedals ride on Foot Brace Rail tracks bolted to the hull sides and set leg length; pushing on them transfers paddling power into the boat and lets the paddler lock in for rough water. The Thigh Brace braces under the deck so the paddler can edge and roll the boat by lifting one knee, and the Knee Pad pads cushion that contact.

The Seat Assembly carries the weight. A molded Seat Pan sets the paddler low for stability, an adjustable Backband supports the lower back without blocking torso rotation, and a pair of Hip Pad pads close the gap between hips and hull so the boat moves with the paddler. The keyhole cockpit is shaped wide at the front for an easy exit if the boat capsizes and the paddler must wet-exit.

Trim, hatches and bulkheads

Wind pushes harder on the stern of a moving kayak than the bow, so an unweighted boat turns into the wind, a behavior called weathercocking. The Skeg Assembly corrects it. A Skeg Blade drops out of a recessed Skeg Box in the hull; a Skeg Slider on the deck pushes a stiff Skeg Cable to set how far the blade extends. Lowering the skeg shifts the boat's pivot point aft and balances the wind so the paddler can hold a course without correcting every stroke.

The interior is divided by the Bulkhead Set. A Forward Bulkhead and a Aft Bulkhead partition the ends into sealed compartments bonded to the hull with a Bulkhead Seal bead. These compartments do two jobs: they trap air so a flooded boat still floats high enough to be rescued and re-entered, and they hold camping gear dry. Access is through the Hatch Assembly hatches, each a Hatch Cover sealing onto a bonded Hatch Rim over a Hatch Gasket.

Deck rigging, fittings and paddle

The deck carries the working hardware. The Deck Rigging strings Bungee Cord across the deck to hold a chart, pump or spare paddle, and runs a static Deck Line around the perimeter as a continuous handhold for self-rescue and assisted rescue. Both lines anchor to recessed Pad Eye fittings and route through Deck Fitting fairleads. At each end the End Fittings add a Carry Toggle on a short Toggle Cord for carrying and a screw-in Drain Plug for emptying the hull.

The Paddle is the engine. A long Paddle Shaft carries an asymmetric Paddle Blade at each end, joined at a Ferrule Joint that splits the paddle for transport and sets the feather angle between the blades so the upper one slices the wind. A Drip Ring on each side of the shaft stops water from running down onto the paddler's hands and lap on every stroke. Touring paddlers cover 20 to 40 km in a day and use the boat for multi-day coastal expeditions, surf-zone crossings and open-water navigation.
