Passenger Ferry Product

Overview

A passenger ferry is a merchant ship designed specifically for rapid point-to-point movement of road vehicles and foot passengers over distances of a few hundred kilometres. Unlike general cargo vessels, ferries must load and unload within 30–60 minutes per turnaround; this constraint drives the entire design. The Ramp System drops vehicles onto the dock in minutes, the Vehicle Deck is wide open to reduce trailer manoeuvring, and the Passenger Deck holds 1,000–1,800 standing and seated humans with catering and toilet facilities.

The Hull Structure is a double-bottomed steel shell, subdivided by Watertight Bulkhead compartments for damage stability. Twin Marine Diesel Engine plants driving Propeller shafts deliver 19–22 knots, enough to keep the service schedule across a 300 km overnight or day crossing. The Bridge is a full-width wheelhouse with modern Navigation Display and Radar Antenna equipment for all-weather operation.

Hull and structure

The Hull Structure is all-welded mild steel, 8–14 mm plate thickness, with continuous Longitudinal Frame stiffeners and ring Transverse Frame every 1–2 metres. The bow terminates in a reinforced Stem Post meeting bulbous bow form; the stern has a pronounced Sternpost mounting the rudder and supporting the propeller shafting. The double bottom extends the full length, divided by the Keel Plate centerline and subdivided by watertight transverse bulkheads into ballast and void compartments.

The Superstructure is split into two deckhouses: the main deck-house contains vehicle access and ticketing, the upper structure houses the Bridge. All exposed decks are sloped aft 1–2° for drainage. Window Frame installations are large and numerous on passenger decks to meet habitability codes.

Vehicle operations

The Vehicle Deck is open or semi-enclosed, with minimal internal structure to maximise turning radius. Vehicles are parked in lane-markings Parking Guide and secured against rough seas by Lashing Ring pad-eyes spaced in regular grids. Two large Main Ramp units lower from the ship's sides, operated by Ramp Hydraulic Cylinder and controlled from the deck by Ramp Control Panel. The ramps are interlocked — Ramp Sensor detect when both are fully retracted before the ferry leaves port. Vehicles are driven on and off by port workers or drivers; typical loading is 40–60 minutes for a full deck.

The Ventilation Trunk and Deck Drain manage exhaust fumes and washwater runoff during loading.

Passenger accommodation

The Passenger Deck is primarily an open seating area with rows of Seat Assembly — 400–600 reclining chairs facing views or entertainment screens. Aft and amidships are Toilet Unit banks (at least 1 WC per 125 passengers), Shop Counter selling duty-free goods and fast food, and a Bar Counter for licensed beverages. The deck is carpeted with Carpet Flooring and lit by both natural light and electric fittings; Emergency Lighting provides battery backup in case of power loss.

Passenger comfort in a seaway depends on hull motion. Most medium ferries operate in seas of Beaufort scale 3–5, so motion is noticeable; reclined seating and closed food service are standard practices.

Propulsion and steering

The vessel is driven by a pair of Marine Diesel Engine units of 2,000–3,000 kW each, stepping down through Reduction Gearbox units to drive two fixed-pitch Propeller at 100–150 RPM. The Propeller Shaft runs aft through the hull in a sterntube, supported by the Thrust Block. Each engine is independently throttled via Engine Telegraph commands from the wheelhouse. Steering is by a single large rudder aft of the propellers.

Service speed is 19–22 knots (35–40 km/h), consuming roughly 450 L/h of marine diesel oil at full power. The ferry carries 200–400 tonnes of fuel for intercontinental routes.

Bridge and navigation

The full-width Bridge is equipped with a modern Navigation Display showing electronic charts, Radar Antenna overlay, and Automatic Identification System (AIS) targets. A GPS Antenna provides position and heading. The master commands the vessel from a central Console Unit combining helm wheel, side-thrusters (if fitted) and engine throttles. Communications are handled by a VHF Radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) capability for distress.

The bridge windows are large, heated and wiped, providing 180° forward visibility; all windows are laminated safety glass.

Stability and ballast

The Ballast System trims the vessel fore-aft and adjusts static stability by flooding or emptying Ballast Tank compartments. Ballast is seawater, drawn in by Ballast Pump and controlled by Ballast Valve from the engine room. On an empty vehicle deck the ferry is light and tender; ballast is taken to lower the centre of gravity and reduce rolling period. With a full load of vehicles the draft increases 1–2 metres.

Safety and evacuation

The ferry carries lifeboats and life rafts in accordance with SOLAS, i.e. lifeboat capacity for all souls plus 25%. Two rigid Lifeboat are lowered on Lifeboat Davit, each with a small diesel engine and radio. Four inflatable Life Raft are mounted in quick-release canisters. Lifebuoy rings are spaced at regular intervals around the rail, each with a floating line. Evacuation Station are marked on each deck with Muster Sign pictograms; all passengers muster within 30 minutes of the alarm.
