Offshore Supply Vessel

Overview

An offshore supply vessel is the truck of the oil and gas industry, carrying everything a drilling rig or production platform needs and taking waste and equipment back to shore. Its deck hauls containers, pipe, and skids, while its tanks carry drilling mud, cement, fuel, fresh water, and brine that are pumped up to the platform through hoses. The vessel must hold position alongside a fixed installation in open sea while cargo transfers, which it does by dynamic positioning rather than mooring.

The hull is a steel form with a large open cargo deck aft and the accommodation and bridge forward. Propulsion is diesel-electric feeding azimuth thrusters under a dynamic positioning system. Below deck the cargo systems move liquids and dry bulk, and on deck the deck equipment handles the lifts. A bank of safety systems supports the platforms it serves.

Hull and cargo deck

The hull uses steel plating over a frame and deck structure sized for the heavy deck loads and the slamming a supply vessel takes in weather. The signature feature is the cargo deck, a reinforced timber-sheathed steel deck rated for thousands of tonnes of containers, casing, and skids. Below it sit the bulk product tanks for mud, brine, and barite and the fuel tanks that carry both the vessel's own fuel and fuel for delivery. Steering is by a rudder tied into the dynamic positioning system.

Propulsion and dynamic positioning

Holding station next to a platform in wind and swell is the defining task, so the vessel runs diesel-electric propulsion driving azimuth thrusters that point thrust in any direction. The dynamic positioning system reads position from a DGPS reference and motion from a motion reference unit, then commands the thruster drives and bow thrusters to cancel drift. A DP-2 class is normal for supply work, with the power and control split into redundant halves so the loss of one generator or thruster does not push the vessel into the platform.

Cargo systems

The cargo systems are the reason the vessel exists. Mud transfer pumps with abrasion-resistant bodies move drilling mud and brine, while the dry bulk system fluidizes cement and barite with compressed air and pushes it up to the rig from pressure pots. Cargo pumps deliver fuel and fresh water through hoses paid out from hose reels. The whole transfer is run from the cargo control system, which tracks tank levels and line pressures, and a tank cleaning system readies bulk tanks for a different product.

Deck equipment

The deck equipment loads and lands the cargo. A knuckle-boom crane handles containers and stores, tugger winches drag cargo across the deck into position, and cargo rails along the deck edge retain it in a seaway. Anchor windlasses handle ground tackle, and all the machinery runs on oil from the hydraulic power unit.

Power and bridge

Electrical demand varies between transit, cargo work, and DP, so the power system runs four diesel generators onto a main switchboard split into redundant sections for DP, with transformers for low-voltage loads and an emergency generator for essentials. The bridge has a forward navigation station with radars and ECDIS and an aft conning station from which the operator works the DP console while watching the cargo deck and the platform alongside.

Accommodation and safety systems

The accommodation block in the forward house holds cabins, a galley, HVAC, and a reverse-osmosis fresh water plant. Crews work two-week or four-week rotations, so the house is sized for comfortable rest between long cargo runs in heavy weather. Many supply vessels carry safety systems for the installations they serve: external fire monitors fed by a high-capacity FiFi pump to fight platform fires from alongside, an oil recovery system for spills, a fast rescue boat, and liferafts for abandon-ship.

Operating profile

A platform supply vessel spends its life in three modes that shape every system aboard. In transit it runs at 12 to 14 knots between port and field, drawing modest power and burning fuel efficiently on part of its generator capacity. Alongside a platform it sits in dynamic positioning for hours while liquids transfer through the hoses and the platform crane lifts deck cargo, which is when the power split into redundant halves matters most because a single fault must not let the vessel surge into the structure. In port it loads the next run: drilling mud and brine pumped into the bulk tanks, cement and barite blown into the pressure pots, fuel and water into their tanks, and containers and pipe craned onto the cargo deck. Loading is planned so that the vessel stays stable as tanks fill and empty over a voyage, and the cargo control system tracks every tank against the loading plan. The mix of liquid, dry bulk, and deck cargo on one hull is what makes the type the workhorse of field logistics.
