Bulk Carrier

Overview

A bulk carrier is a single-deck ship built to move unpackaged dry cargo: iron ore, coal, grain, bauxite, cement and aggregates loaded loose into the hold and discharged by grab, conveyor or pneumatic unloader. The largest common size, the Capesize, runs to about 200,000 deadweight tonnes and 300 m, too wide for the Panama and Suez locks, so it routes around the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn. The defining feature is the cross section: seven large Cargo Holds framed by sloping Topside Tanks above and Hopper Tanks below, a shape that lets heavy cargo trim itself toward the centreline and clear toward the grab. Propulsion is a single slow-speed Two-Stroke Main Engine, and the hull is assembled from around 60 prefabricated Hull Blocks.

Hull and cargo holds

Unlike a tanker or a container ship, a typical bulk carrier has a single side skin: the side shell is framed directly by Web Frames rather than wrapped in a wing tank, which keeps steel weight and cost down but loads those frames heavily. Each Cargo Hold is bounded fore and aft by a vertically Corrugated Bulkhead sitting on upper and lower stools. Corrugation gives the bulkhead stiffness without internal framing that would trap cargo and resist cleaning. The hold floor is a thick Tank Top Plating plate over the double bottom, reinforced to take the impact of clamshell grabs and the wheels of the bulldozers used to trim the last of the cargo.

The loading regime drives the structure. Heavy ore fills only some holds in the alternate-loading condition, leaving others empty, so the bulkheads and double bottom see large differential pressures. Structural failure on older bulkers, often a corroded Corrugated Bulkhead flooding one hold and overloading the next, drove the IACS Common Structural Rules and the requirement for hold-flooding survivability. Each hold goes together with thousands of Hold Structure Weld joints, Hold Access Ladder access sets and aft Bilge Wells with mud boxes and strums.

Hatch covers

The holds are closed by large Hatch Covers that must open fully and fast so a shore grab or ship-mounted grab has clear reach to the cargo. Most bulkers use side-rolling covers: hydraulic Hatch Hydraulic Cylinders lift the panel off its rest pads onto Hatch Roller wheels, then drive it sideways along coaming rails to stack clear of the opening. Weathertightness comes from Hatch Gasket packing compressed against the coaming bar by quick-acting Hatch Cleats, with Coaming Drain Valves shedding gutter water overboard. Boarding seas on the foredeck make hatch-cover integrity a survival issue: a failed cover that floods the forward hold has sunk loaded bulkers.

Main engine and shafting

Propulsion is a six-cylinder slow-speed two-stroke crosshead diesel of around 60-70 cm bore, delivering roughly 15-20 MW directly to the Propeller Shaft at about 90 rpm. Each Cylinder Assembly carries an oil-cooled Piston on a Piston Rod that passes through to the Crosshead, keeping side thrust off the Cylinder Liner. The Cylinder Cover holds the Exhaust Valve and fuel valves, the Turbocharger supplies the Scavenge Air System, and the Fuel Injection System and Lubrication System keep it running on heavy fuel. The engine is chosen for fuel economy at modest speed: a Capesize cruises at 14-15 knots, far slower than a container ship, because freight rates for ore and coal reward low cost per tonne-mile over speed. Power passes through the Shaft Line and its Stern Tube to a fixed-pitch Propeller, steered by a Rudder and Steering Gear.

Ballast and trim

Cargo density swings the draught enormously: loaded with ore the ship floats deep, and on the empty return leg it would ride too high to handle without ballast. The Ballast System fills the topside, hopper and double-bottom tanks through Ballast Pumps sized to deballast the ship within the time it takes to load cargo, so the ship can take ore as fast as the terminal can pour it. A Ballast Water Treatment Unit treats the water to the IMO discharge standard before it goes back to sea. Ballast capacity also matters in heavy weather, where a fully ballasted forepeak keeps the bow down and reduces slamming.

Deck machinery and self-discharge

Many bulkers are gearless and rely entirely on shore equipment, but ships that trade to undeveloped ports carry their own Deck Cranes: slewing cranes with a Grab Bucket that bites into the cargo and lifts it clear of the hold. Each crane turns on a Slew Bearing and works its load through hoist and luffing Winch Drums driven by servo motors and gearboxes. Forward, twin Anchor Windlasses handle the Bower Anchors, and Mooring Winches at both ends hold the ship to the berth.

Accommodation and systems

A crew of around 20 lives in the aft Deckhouse, in Crew Cabins on floating floors served by a central HVAC Plant, with the Bridge Console above carrying radar and ECDIS. A stern Lifeboat Station with a free-fall lifeboat meets SOLAS abandonment rules. Electrical power comes from three Auxiliary Gensets, and the Piping Systems, thousands of spools, flanges and valves, ties ballast, bilge, fuel and fire mains together. Built in about 12 months and traded for 20-25 years, a single Capesize moves more ore in a year than entire fleets of smaller ships.
