Center-Console Boat

Overview

A center-console boat puts the helm on a freestanding module near the middle of the boat, with open deck running all the way around it. There is no cabin and no side decks blocking the gunwales, so an angler can follow a fish from the bow to the stern without stepping over furniture. That open layout is the reason the type dominates inshore and offshore sport fishing in the 7 to 11 m range. The boat described here is a 28 ft hull powered by twin outboards, rigged for both bait fishing and offshore trolling.

The build splits into eight subsystems: the GRP Hull, the Center Console Module module with its T-top, the Outboard Motor motors, the Fuel System system, the Steering System gear, the Electrical System system, the Navigation Electronics suite, and the Fishing Features features. Everything is sized for salt water, so fasteners are stainless and electrical runs are tinned and sealed.

Hull

The GRP Hull is a deep-V molded from foam-cored fiberglass. A 22 degree deadrise at the transom lets the sharp forefoot knife through a chop and slice down into waves rather than slam flat across them, which is what makes a long offshore run bearable. The cored laminate keeps the shell stiff without the weight of solid glass, and a grid of foam-filled stringers bonded into the bilge spreads the engine and pounding loads across the bottom. The molded deck liner drops onto the shell and is bonded at the rub rail, giving the cockpit sole, the gunwales and the non-skid surface in one piece. The transom is built up thicker than the rest of the hull because it carries the full thrust and weight of the outboards hung off its back.

Console and T-top

The console is a GRP shell standing in the center of the cockpit. It carries the Helm Dash with the display and switch panel, houses the rigging tubes and battery storage inside, and supports the wheel and throttle. A Leaning Post Seat seat sits behind it with a cooler tucked underneath. Over the top is the T-Top, a welded aluminum frame stretched with acrylic canvas that shades the helm, mounts the rod holders and antennas, and carries spreader lights for working the deck after dark. The console is deliberately compact so the walkaround stays clear. Because the helm sits amidships, the skipper can see fish marks on the sonar and reach the cockpit in a step.

Outboard power

This hull runs twin four-stroke Outboard Motor motors. Each is a self-contained unit: a V6 Powerhead with block, pistons, crankshaft and fuel injection at the top, a Midsection carrying the exhaust and drive shaft, and a Lower Unit gearcase that turns the vertical drive 90 degrees onto the propeller shaft through a bevel Helical Gear Pair. A rubber-impeller water pump pulls raw water up to cool the engine. Power trim and tilt sets the running angle and lifts the gearcases clear when beaching or trailering. Two engines give redundancy offshore: if one fails, the other gets the boat home. Outboards also keep the bilge clear of machinery, which frees up cockpit space and simplifies maintenance because the whole unit hangs off the transom.

Steering and controls

The boat uses hydraulic power steering. A Helm Pump behind the wheel pressurizes a sealed circuit, and a transom-mounted cylinder swings the engines. A rigid tie bar links the two outboards so they turn as one. The binnacle control head shifts and throttles both engines, and on this rig it ties into the autopilot so the course computer can steer hands-free during a long troll.

Electrical and electronics

The Electrical System system runs separate cranking batteries for the engines and a deep-cycle house bank for pumps, lights and the helm. A battery switch isolates the banks so accessory draw cannot flatten a starting battery. Bilge pumps on float switches clear water automatically. The Navigation Electronics suite centers on a Multifunction Display touchscreen that shows the chart, GPS position and sonar from a transom transducer on one screen. A fixed VHF radio with DSC handles communication and distress, and the autopilot holds a course.

Fishing features

The cockpit is built around the catch. An aerated Livewell keeps baitfish alive with a recirculating raw-water pump, insulated in-deck fish boxes hold the catch on ice, and rod holders line the gunwales and the T-top. A bow Anchor Windlass drops and recovers the anchor so the crew can stay on the rods. The 360 degree walkaround is the whole point: a hooked fish can run anywhere around the boat and the angler can follow it without obstruction.
