Container Feeder Ship

Product

Overview

A container feeder ship is a small container vessel that moves boxes between a large hub port and the smaller regional ports that deepwater mainline ships do not call at. Mainline vessels of 10,000 TEU and above concentrate cargo at a few transhipment hubs; the feeder collects and redistributes those boxes across short sea routes, typically a few hundred to a couple of thousand nautical miles per leg. Feeder sizes run from about 1,000 TEU up to around 3,000 TEU, with length overall of 130 to 210 m, beam of 20 to 30 m, and a design draft near 8.5 to 11 m so the ship can enter shallow secondary ports.

The hull is a single-screw steel monohull driven by one diesel engine at a service speed of 16 to 22 kn. Many feeders are geared, meaning they carry their own Deck Crane so they can load and discharge at quays that lack shore gantry cranes. Gearless feeders are lighter and cheaper but depend entirely on port equipment. The ship is built to the rules of an IACS classification society and complies with SOLAS for safety, MARPOL for pollution control, and the IMO ballast water convention.

Hull and cargo arrangement

The Hull Structure is an all-welded steel structure framed mostly longitudinally in the bottom and deck with transverse web frames. A Double Bottom runs the full length, giving a cellular space for fuel oil, lubricating oil, fresh water, and ballast while protecting the cargo spaces if the outer bottom is breached. The double bottom is built from a flat plate keel, longitudinal girders, and transverse floor plates closed off by the inner bottom plating that forms the floor of each Cargo Hold.

The holds are box-shaped and fitted with vertical Cell Guide angles that locate each container by its corners as it is lowered in, so boxes self-align and need no lashing below deck. Watertight transverse bulkheads divide the hull into compartments for damage stability. Above the holds sit pontoon-type hatch covers; each Hatch Cover is lifted off by crane to open a hold and is sealed against the coaming by a rubber gasket and clamped by quick-acting cleats. Containers are also stacked on top of the closed hatch covers and along the open deck, located by stacking cones and held by the on-deck cell guide structure and twistlocks.

Wing and bottom Ballast Tank groups let the crew adjust trim, list, and draft as cargo is loaded and burned fuel changes the weight distribution. Each tank carries air vents, sounding pipes, and sacrificial anodes to slow internal corrosion. A bow thruster improves low-speed handling in tight feeder ports where tug availability is limited.

Propulsion

The Main Propulsion line centers on one Main Diesel Engine, usually a turbocharged four-stroke medium-speed diesel of 8,000 to 15,000 kW burning heavy fuel oil or marine gas oil. On medium-speed installations a Reduction Gearbox drops the engine speed to an efficient propeller range, while larger feeders may use a slow-speed two-stroke engine coupled directly to the shaft. Engine power passes through a thrust bearing that pushes the propeller force into the hull, then along the intermediate shaft and tail shaft, which runs through the oil-lubricated stern tube to a four-blade fixed-pitch bronze Propeller about 5 to 6 m in diameter.

The engine itself is built around a welded block, a forged crankshaft, replaceable cylinder liners, and individual cylinder heads carrying valves and a Fuel Injector. Two exhaust gas turbochargers recover energy from the exhaust to force scavenge air into the cylinders, raising power density and fuel economy. Routine wear items such as liners, piston rings, and bearing shells are designed for replacement at scheduled overhauls.

Cargo handling and reefers

Feeders carry a large share of refrigerated cargo, so power for reefer containers is a major design driver. The ship provides 200 to 500 Reefer Power Outlet outlets, each a weatherproof 440 V three-phase marine socket fed through its own branch breaker. The combined reefer demand can exceed the propulsion-independent electrical load of the rest of the ship, which sizes the generator plant.

Securing the deck stacks uses twistlocks between corner castings and diagonal Lashing Rod sets tensioned by turnbuckles, with lashing bridges giving crew safe access to the upper tiers. On geared feeders the Deck Crane is a slewing pedestal crane with a telescopic spreader that engages container corner castings, letting the ship work cargo at quays with no shore gantry.

Power and systems

The Power Generation plant uses three auxiliary diesel Auxiliary Genset units of 600 to 1,200 kW each feeding a 440 V Main Switchboard that synchronizes the running sets and shares load. An emergency generator covers steering, navigation, and safety loads if the main plant blacks out, and a shore connection lets the ship draw port power during long stays. Step-down transformers supply 230 V lighting and small power.

Auxiliary systems include the Ballast and Bilge System and bilge plant with its ballast water treatment unit, the Fuel and Lube Oil System system with settling and service tanks plus centrifugal purifiers and viscosity heaters, the steering gear, and the accommodation HVAC plant. The bridge carries an integrated Navigation and Bridge suite with dual radar, ECDIS, gyrocompass, GNSS, AIS, and an Autopilot that holds heading by driving the steering gear. Steering gear pumps, ballast pumps, and purifier spindles all rely on rolling-element bearings such as the Ball Bearing.

Variants

Feeders split into geared and gearless types. Geared ships trade some cargo capacity and added topweight for the freedom to serve ports without cranes, which suits developing regional networks. Gearless feeders maximize box capacity and minimize maintenance for routes between well-equipped terminals. Ice-classed variants for the Baltic and northern Europe add hull strengthening, a heavier propeller, and winterized deck equipment. Higher reefer counts mark vessels built for cold-chain trades such as fruit and fish, with extra generator capacity and reefer plug positions across both deck and hold.

Operations

A typical feeder runs a fixed weekly loop calling at one hub and several smaller ports, spending much of its time in port working cargo. Short legs and frequent maneuvering put a premium on engine reliability, fast cargo turnaround, and shallow draft. Fuel burned over a voyage shifts ballast needs continuously, so the crew adjusts tank levels to keep the propeller immersed and the ship within trim and stability limits. Because port time dominates the schedule, the cargo cranes, hatch covers, and reefer power systems see heavy daily use and account for a large part of the maintenance workload.
