Livestock Carrier

Product

Overview

A livestock carrier moves live cattle and sheep by sea, most often from Australia, New Zealand and South America to the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia. The cargo is alive for the whole voyage, so the ship is really a floating intensive-farming barn: it has to feed, water, ventilate and clean up after tens of thousands of animals for up to a month at sea. Some carriers are purpose-built, others are conversions of car carriers or bulk ships with extra decks fitted inside the hull.

The structure is a many-decked Hull Structure with open mesh sides for ventilation. Each Pen Deck is split into open-topped pens. Air is forced through the enclosed lower decks by the Ventilation System system; fodder reaches the troughs through the Feed System; drinking water is made and distributed by the Fresh-Water System; manure is cleared by the Manure & Effluent System; the Propulsion Train train drives the ship; and the crew and a dedicated stockman team live in the Deckhouse.

The pen decks

The interior is divided into low decks, often eight to eleven of them, with headroom suited to the animals rather than to people. Each Pen Deck is laid out as a grid of pens made from removable Pen Rail & Gate sections dropped into Pen Stanchion sockets, so pen sizes can be set for cattle on one voyage and sheep on the next. Along the pen fronts run a Feed Trough line and a float-valve Water Trough giving continuous water. The deck itself is a non-slip Deck Panel that gives the animals footing and lets effluent drain away. Animals are loaded by walking them up shore ramps and then up the internal Internal Ramp runs to their assigned deck.

Ventilation and heat stress

Ventilation is the single most important system on the ship, because the greatest risk to the animals is heat stress when a fully loaded vessel crosses the tropics or sits in a hot port. The Ventilation System system drives many air changes per hour through every enclosed deck using banks of axial Supply Fan and Exhaust Fan units linked by Ventilation Duct trunking. Open Side Ventilation Opening panels in the hull add cross-flow on the weather decks. A Ventilation Controller panel ramps the fans by deck against readings from Climate Sensor units that watch temperature, humidity and ammonia. The design target is to hold the wet-bulb temperature and ammonia level inside each pen below the thresholds where cattle and sheep stop coping, which sets the very high installed fan power that distinguishes these ships.

Feed and water

Animals on a long voyage eat and drink large daily quantities, so the supply systems are sized like a small feed mill and a small desalination plant. The Feed System stores pellets, grain and chaff in bulk Fodder Silo tanks and moves it by Feed Conveyor runs and Feed Auger screws to the deck troughs, metered by a Feed Weigher so each deck gets its ration. Fresh water is made on board because no tank could hold the voyage demand: the Fresh-Water System runs Reverse-Osmosis Plant reverse-osmosis units and a jacket-heat Fresh-Water Evaporator, buffers it in storage tanks and pumps it through a distribution network to the float-controlled troughs.

Waste handling and welfare

Bedding and manure build up fast and must be cleared to keep the decks dry and the air breathable. The Manure & Effluent System gives the stockmen a deck washdown ring main fed by Washdown Pump units; the runoff drains to Effluent Sump collection points, passes a Effluent Screen and macerator, and is then either discharged where rules allow or held in a Effluent Holding Tank. Animal welfare is overseen by a dedicated team: the Deckhouse includes extra cabins for stockmen and a Veterinary Room for treating sick or injured animals during the voyage.

Propulsion and electrical load

The ship is driven by the Propulsion Train train, a medium-speed Main Engine turning a Propeller through a reduction gearbox. The defining electrical feature is the size of the auxiliary load: the fans, feed conveyors, water-making plant and washdown pumps draw far more power than a comparable dry-cargo ship, so several Auxiliary Genset sets run continuously rather than only the one or two a normal ship needs at sea. Loss of ventilation power is treated as an emergency, so the generating plant is arranged with redundancy.

Materials, regulation and variants

Decks and pens use coated or galvanised steel with non-slip surfaces, and troughs are stainless or food-grade coated for hygiene. The trade is tightly regulated: exporting countries set stocking densities, ventilation minimums, fodder reserves and journey-management rules, and many recent ships were built or converted specifically to meet stricter heat-stress standards. Sizes range from small short-haul carriers of a few thousand cattle up to large purpose-built ships carrying twenty thousand cattle or seventy thousand sheep. The defining engineering challenge across all of them is keeping a dense, living cargo healthy through weeks at sea in changing climates.
