Outboard Boat Motor

Product

Overview

An outboard motor is a self-contained propulsion unit that clamps to a boat's transom, combining engine, drivetrain, steering pivot and propeller in one tiltable package. This is a 150-horsepower four-stroke: a 2.0-liter inline-four marine engine driving a vertical shaft down to a right-angle gearcase and propeller. Mounting everything outboard keeps the engine out of the hull, frees interior space, and lets the whole unit tilt up out of the water for shallow running, trailering and beaching.

The unit stacks three major sections. The Powerhead is the engine itself, sitting at the top under the cowl. Below it the Midsection houses the exhaust passage and driveshaft tube and isolates engine vibration through rubber mounts. At the bottom, the Lower Unit / Gearcase turns the vertical drive 90 degrees through bevel gears to the propeller shaft and houses the cooling water pump. The Fuel System supplies the engine, the Tilt & Trim Hydraulics hydraulics raise and angle the unit, the Control Electronics (ECU) ECU manages injection and ignition, and the unit pivots on its Steering Bracket.

How it works

The crankshaft in the powerhead drives a vertical drive shaft running down through the midsection into the gearcase. There a pinion meshes with forward and reverse bevel gears; a sliding dog clutch selects which gear drives the horizontal propeller shaft, giving forward, neutral and reverse. The flywheel-mounted alternator charges the battery and powers the ECU, which times the coil-per-cylinder ignition and fires the fuel injectors. Cooling is open-loop: a rubber impeller pump in the lower unit, turned by the drive shaft, draws raw water up through the powerhead and exhaust before it discharges overboard, with a thermostat holding operating temperature. Power trim and tilt cylinders set the thrust angle relative to the transom for best planing, and lift the leg clear of the water when stopped. Exhaust exits through the gearcase and out the propeller hub below the waterline.
