Industrial Quilting Machine

Product

Overview

An industrial quilting machine stitches three layers, a face cloth on top, a batting or wadding filler in the middle, and a backing cloth underneath, into a single padded panel held together by a quilted stitch pattern. The machine carries a row of needles across its full working width and drives them in unison while a CNC carriage steers the stitch path, so a complete pattern is laid across the whole panel at once rather than line by line. Output runs to continuous rolled goods for mattress covers, mattress borders, furniture cushions, sleeping bags, apparel padding, and packing material.

This 64 needle configuration covers a 2,400 mm working width at a 38.1 mm needle gauge. Each needle forms a lockstitch with its own Rotary Hook and bobbin below the table, so the 64 stitch lines run in parallel as the web advances. The pattern itself is set by the lateral motion of the heads under CNC control, which lets a single bar produce continuous diamonds, waves, scrolls, or custom artwork.

How it works

The layered web is assembled at the infeed. Face cloth and backing pay off from Let-Off Roll units while polyester wadding feeds from the Batting and Wadding Feed cradle between them. A spreader opens the wadding to full width and a friction brake holds steady unwind tension so the filler enters flat. Driven nip rollers in the Fabric Feed and Roller System pull the combined web through the stitch zone, and a dancer arm keeps tension constant as roll diameter changes.

At the stitch zone the Multi-Needle Bar Assembly reciprocates vertically. The Sewing Head Main Drive turns the upper main shaft through a 5.5 kW servo, and a crank on the shaft converts that rotation into the needle stroke. Each downstroke pushes the upper thread through the web, the rotary hook below catches the loop and carries it around the bobbin, and the take-up lever pulls the slack to set the lockstitch. The hook shaft is geared to the main shaft so all 64 hooks stay timed to the needles.

Pattern motion comes from the CNC Pattern Carriage, an X-Y bridge. The X bridge spans the machine width and the Y carriage rides along it, each driven by a Servo Motor through a Ball Screw running on a Linear Guide Rail. The controller computes the path and feeds position commands to the Servo Drive for each axis while coordinating the head drive and the feed roller advance, so stitch length stays uniform along curves. Encoders close the loop on each axis.

Upper thread is metered by the Thread Tensioning and Creel creel. Sixty-four cones sit on a floor stand, each thread passing through a disc tensioner, a take-up lever, and guides to its needle. An optical break detector watches all lines and halts the machine if any thread breaks, which prevents a run of skipped or open stitches across the panel.

After stitching, the Edge Trim and Thread Cutter unit squares the panel edge with rotary knives and a pneumatic cutter clears the threads at the end of each seam. A chute and fan carry the trimmed waste away. The finished panel winds onto the take-up roll.

Subsystems

The Frame and Table is a welded steel base with a stainless worktable under the needles and interlocked guard doors. The Electrical Control Cabinet holds the motion controller, the servo drives, DC power supplies, and a touchscreen interface, with emergency stops at the corners. The Pneumatic System system supplies 6 bar air to the presser foot lift, web clamps, and thread cutter through solenoid valves. The Central Lubrication System system meters oil from a central pump to the needle bar bearings, the hook points, and the main shaft.

Materials

The frame is welded mild steel, stress relieved before machining so the table stays flat under load. The needle bar beam is extruded aluminium to keep the reciprocating mass low at high stitch rates. Rotary hooks and bobbin cases are hardened steel for wear life. Guide rails and ball-screws are case-hardened and ground. Rollers are steel cored with a rubber or polyurethane cover at the nip for grip without marking the cloth. Thread is bonded polyester or nylon sized to the needle, and batting is most often polyester wadding from 100 to 600 grams per square metre.

Variants and applications

Bars are built in needle counts from 18 to over 100 and in gauges from 0.75 in to 3 in, so the same frame serves fine apparel quilting and coarse mattress quilting. Single needle CNC machines exist for free-motion artwork at lower output, while multi-needle machines like this one trade pattern freedom for far higher throughput on repeating patterns. Chain stitch heads are offered where thread economy matters more than seam security. Common end uses are mattress panels and borders, quilted upholstery, mattress protectors, sleeping bags, winter apparel lining, and quilted thermal or acoustic blankets.
