Overview
A modern flagship smartphone is a pocket computer, a multi-band radio, and a camera array packed into a glass-and-aluminium slab a few millimetres thick. Almost every internal volume is contested: the OLED Display Module occupies the front, the Battery Pack takes the largest single share of the interior, and the Mainboard (Logic Board) is folded and stacked to fit in the space that remains. A CNC-machined Aluminium Mid-Frame ties these together and carries the loads, while the Rear Glass Cover seals the rear. The whole thing is held by an Adhesive & Gasket Kit of gaskets and tapes plus a Fastener Set of micro screws, and it is engineered to survive drops, water, and years of daily charge cycles.
Display and touch
The front is a OLED Display Module: a flexible OLED panel (LCD Panel) whose subpixels emit their own light, so there is no backlight and blacks are truly off. Touch is handled by a Capacitive Touch Sensor laminated on-cell rather than as a separate glued layer, which keeps the stack thin. That sensor is a patterned grid of ITO Transparent Conductor, indium tin oxide, the standard transparent conductor that lets a capacitive grid sit directly in the optical path. A Display Driver IC (DDIC) scans the panel and the OLED Flex Cable carries signal down to the board. On top sits the Front Cover Glass, an aluminosilicate glass that is chemically strengthened: large potassium ions are exchanged into the surface, putting it under compression so cracks struggle to propagate.
Logic board and SoC
The Mainboard (Logic Board) is a high-density-interconnect Bare PCB with components on both faces. At its centre is the Compute SoC Module, the application processor that runs the operating system, GPU, and AI accelerators. Memory is stacked package-on-package directly above it as LPDDR5 DRAM LPDDR5 DRAM, with persistent files on UFS Flash Storage UFS flash. A Power Management IC generates the many supply rails the silicon needs. Radios fill the rest: a 5G Modem baseband, a RF Transceiver, several RF Power Amplifier Module power-amplifier front-ends whose gain dies are gallium arsenide rather than silicon, a WiFi/BT Combo IC, and a Audio Codec IC. Around them are roughly 1,300 SMD Passive (R/C/L) and the Connector board-to-board links that join the stacked boards. The board is also a quiet bill of precious and specialty metals: gold in Gold Bond Wire / Plating Stock, silver in Refined Silver pastes and terminations, palladium in Palladium Sponge capacitor electrodes, tantalum in Capacitor-Grade Tantalum Powder capacitors, and tin solder from Refined Tin Ingot, with timing set by two Synthetic Quartz Crystal resonators.
Battery and power
Power comes from the Battery Pack, a single-cell lithium-polymer pack. The Li-Ion Pouch Cell is a stacked-electrode pouch holding around 15–20 Wh, paired with a BMS Board that gauges charge and protects against over-current and over-temperature. The cell is where the phone's heaviest material debts sit: the cathode draws on Lithium Carbonate (battery grade), Cobalt Sulfate (battery grade), Nickel Sulfate (battery grade), and Manganese Sulfate (battery grade) for an NMC chemistry, the anode is Battery Anode Graphite on a Copper Cathode current collector, and the cathode foil and tabs use Primary Aluminium Ingot. A Separator Film keeps the electrodes apart while a Electrolyte Fill of LiPF6 in carbonate solvents carries the ions. Energy enters through the Charging System: a USB-C Connector receptacle and a Charge Controller IC for fast wired charging, plus a Wireless Charging Coil for Qi.
Cameras
The Rear Camera System is a triple array. The Main Wide Camera is the workhorse wide, the Ultrawide Camera captures a broader field, and the Telephoto Camera reaches a folded periscope path for zoom; a Flash LED lights dim scenes. Each lens is a Camera Module of sensor and stacked optics, and the higher-index elements use Lanthanum Oxide glass. The wide and telephoto add a OIS Actuator (VCM), a voice-coil motor that nudges the lens against hand shake using Sintered NdFeB Magnet rare-earth magnets and a Copper Cathode coil. Facing the user, the Front Camera Module pairs an CMOS Image Sensor with a Lens Assembly.
Enclosure, audio, and haptics
The Aluminium Mid-Frame is machined from a Machined Aluminium Frame billet of 7000-series alloy drawn from Primary Aluminium Ingot, with a Vapor Chamber spreading heat off the SoC. The Rear Glass Cover is a Rear Glass Panel panel with an NFC Antenna Coil coil laminated inside. Sound is produced by the Audio System: two Speaker units for stereo, an Earpiece Receiver receiver, and three MEMS Microphone MEMS microphones for calls and noise cancellation. The Haptic Engine engine gives sharp tactile feedback from a Taptic Motor (LRA) linear actuator, weighted by a Tungsten Powder / Heavy Alloy counterweight, with Sintered NdFeB Magnet magnets and a backup Vibration Motor (ERM). Side controls are the Power Button and Volume Button, and a SIM Tray holds a nano-SIM.
Radios, sensors, and antennas
The Antenna System threads through the frame: four Cellular Antenna elements for sub-6 and mmWave 5G, two WiFi/BT Antenna elements, and a GNSS Antenna for satellite positioning. An EMI Shield Set of metal cans keeps these radios from interfering with the digital board. Security relies on a Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor read through the display and a Face Sensor Module, which combines a IR Dot Projector with an CMOS Image Sensor tuned for infrared to build a depth map of the face.
Down to raw materials
Follow any branch far enough and it bottoms out in mined and refined materials. The battery resolves to mined Lithium Carbonate (battery grade), Cobalt Sulfate (battery grade), and Nickel Sulfate (battery grade); the motors and camera actuators to rare-earth Sintered NdFeB Magnet magnets; the touchscreen to Refined Indium (1 kg ingot) and Refined Tin Ingot in its ITO Transparent Conductor; the cover glass to High-Purity Silica Sand and Smelter-Grade Alumina; the amplifiers to Gallium Metal; and the electrolyte's fluorine to Acid-Grade Fluorspar. The frame is Primary Aluminium Ingot, and the board carries Gold Bond Wire / Plating Stock, Refined Silver, Palladium Sponge, and Copper Cathode. A single handset is small, but it concentrates an unusually wide slice of the periodic table.
