Funeral Coach

Product

Overview

A funeral coach, or hearse, is a coachbuilt vehicle whose job is to carry a casket in dignified procession. Like a limousine, it begins as a full-size luxury sedan that a specialist coachbuilder cuts and lengthens, but where a limousine fills the new length with seating, a hearse fills it with a Casket Deck and a glazed Rear Compartment for the casket to be seen. The Stretched Chassis is stretched and lowered, the donor Powertrain is kept and retuned for slow smooth running, and a formal Coachbuilt Body with its landau styling is grafted on. Almost everything behind the front seats is purpose-built, so a hearse shares its front clip and running gear with the donor car but little else.

Stretching and lowering the chassis

The Stretched Chassis is modified much as a limousine's is, but with a different aim. The donor Front Frame Section and Rear Frame Section are rejoined by a fabricated Stretch Frame Insert that adds about a metre, and the floor over the deck is dropped to keep the casket loading height low. Continuous welds, fish plates, and added Crossmember bracing restore the stiffness the long low frame loses. A two-piece Driveshaft with a Centre Bearing spans the new wheelbase. The lowered floor matters because a casket with bearers is heavy and is loaded by hand, so every centimetre of height removed makes the load easier and safer.

Powertrain and refinement

The Powertrain is the donor's, chosen for refinement rather than speed. The V8 Engine is a 5 to 6 litre petrol unit with its Crankshaft and eight Piston assemblies, paired with the Automatic Transmission automatic. A hearse spends most of its working life at walking pace at the head of a procession and then on a quiet highway run to the cemetery, so the calibration favours quiet, vibration-free low-speed running over performance. The vehicle is heavy, often well over two tonnes, but it is rarely asked to accelerate hard, so the standard cooling with a single Radiator and Coolant Pump is adequate.

The casket deck

The defining mechanism of a hearse is the Casket Deck. A flat Deck Table sits at the lowered floor level, fitted with rows of free-spinning Roller Bar rollers so that a single bearer can slide a heavy casket fully into the vehicle without lifting it along its length. A Deck Extension running on Linear Guide Rail rails slides out past the rear door to meet the casket at the threshold, and once the casket is aboard, Casket Lock latches engage its frame so it cannot shift in transit or on a hill. The roller deck is what lets two or three bearers handle a load that would otherwise need many hands, and it is the feature that most clearly separates a hearse from any other long vehicle.

Body and compartment

The Coachbuilt Body gives the hearse its instantly recognisable form. A raised Raised Roof Section adds height over the deck, formal Formal Side Panel quarters run the length of the compartment, and a large Rear Door opens the full rear for loading. The traditional ornaments are the chrome Landau Bar S-bars on the rear quarters and the padded Vinyl Roof, styling that descends from horse-drawn landaus. Inside, the Rear Compartment is finished for viewing: large etched Side Glass and a glazed Rear Glass let mourners see the casket, a pleated Headliner lines the raised roof, Drapery frames the windows, and a Floral Rail holds tributes during the procession. The front Driver Compartment keeps the donor cab, with a Cab Partition dividing the driver from the compartment.

Suspension and coachwork electrical

Because the body is long, heavy, and rearward-biased, the Suspension System replaces the rear coils with Air Spring air bags fed by an Air Compressor, keeping the coach level whether empty or loaded so it neither sags at the rear nor rides harshly at procession pace. The coachbuilt body adds loads the donor wiring never carried, so the Coachwork Electrical system runs a separate coachwork loom for concealed Compartment Lighting, a powered Door Actuator on the heavy rear door, and the deck mechanism, backed by a Auxiliary Battery. The result is a vehicle whose every modification, the lowered deck, the rollers, the glass, the self-levelling rear, serves the single task of carrying and presenting a casket with dignity. Funeral coaches are built in small numbers by a handful of specialist coachbuilders, who typically take a new luxury sedan, cut it, and rebuild the rear over several weeks of hand fabrication and trimming. Because the work is bespoke and the vehicles cover relatively few kilometres each year, a hearse often stays in a funeral home's fleet for a decade or more, repainted and re-trimmed rather than replaced. The colour is almost always black or a sober dark shade, the brightwork is kept polished, and the overall presentation is deliberately formal, since the vehicle is seen by mourners at the most solemn moment of a service. Everything visible to them, the etched glass, the floral display behind it, the slow level ride at the head of the procession, is shaped by that role.
