The rear-loader garbage truck is a manual or semi-automated refuse collection vehicle used primarily in Europe and developing markets. It combines a rear-mounted hopper with horizontal compaction blades that shred and compress waste fed manually by collection crew members standing on the truck's running board or steps.

Unlike the side-loader (which automates the bin grab entirely) or the front-loader (which serves large commercial dumpsters), the rear-loader requires active crew participation. The body is then lowered, the gate closes, and the truck returns to route.

The hydraulic system is simpler than side or front-loaders: a 40 cc/rev pump delivers flow to proportional directional valves controlling packer blades, hopper gate, and tipper mechanism. Maintenance and Design Life

Wear items are the packer blade seals and wear liners, replaced every 6,000–10,000 hours. Hydraulic fluid is changed annually. A well-maintained rear-loader achieves 12–18 years in service, shorter than side/front-loaders due to higher operator-exposure wear and crew-related damage.
