Convertible Car

Product

Overview

A convertible, also called a cabriolet, is a passenger car whose roof can be folded away so the cabin is open to the sky. The appeal is open-air driving; the engineering challenge is everything that follows from cutting the roof off a car that was designed to use that roof for strength, weather sealing, and crash protection. A convertible therefore is not just a coupe with the top removed: its structure, safety systems, and interior are all reworked to cope with the open body.

The car is built on a heavily braced Body Shell carrying the Powertrain, the Chassis, and the Interior. The two systems that set it apart from a fixed-roof car are the Folding Roof System and the Occupant Protection package, supported by the Electrical System and Cooling System systems.

Body and structure

Removing the roof takes away a major part of a car's torsional stiffness, because the roof and its pillars normally tie the two sides of the body together. The Body Shell recovers that stiffness with mass added low in the structure: a Reinforced Floor Pan with closed cross-members and a central tunnel, boxed Reinforced Side Sills along each rocker, and a Cowl Reinforcement Bar running across the car under the windscreen base. This is why convertibles weigh more than the coupes they derive from. The doors use frameless glass since there is no roof rail for the windows to seal against.

Folding roof

The Folding Roof System is the headline feature. The Soft-Top Cover is a multi-layer fabric cover with an insulating Headliner Liner and a heated Heated Rear Window, so a closed convertible behaves much like a fixed-roof car. The fabric is carried on a Roof Folding Frame of Roof Bows and Pivot Links that fold the top into a compact Z-shape. A Hydraulic Power Unit with its Hydraulic Pump and four Hydraulic Cylinders drives the motion, while Header Latchs release the header and a Tonneau Cover closes over the stowed roof. Several Roof Position Sensors confirm each stage so the Roof Control Module sequences the cycle safely, typically in fifteen to twenty seconds.

Occupant protection

An open car cannot rely on a roof to protect occupants in a rollover, so a convertible carries a dedicated Occupant Protection system. Spring-loaded Pop-Up Roll Bars sit hidden behind the rear headrests and fire upward in milliseconds when a Rollover Sensor detects the car overturning, creating a survival space together with the reinforced A-Pillar Reinforcement in the windscreen frame. The car also carries side and knee Airbag Modules and belt Belt Pretensioners, since the deformation behaviour of an open body differs from a closed one.

Powertrain and chassis

Mechanically, the convertible usually shares its Powertrain with the coupe or saloon it is based on. A front-mounted V6 Engine, often a V6, drives the rear wheels through a Automatic Gearbox automatic and a Open Differential. The Chassis reuses the Double-Wishbone Corner and multi-link corners but is retuned, because the added weight and slightly softer body change how the suspension should be damped. Brakes and steering are carried over from the closed model.

Interior and use

Open driving brings wind and weather into the cabin, so the Interior is built to cope. A Wind Deflector behind the seats cuts buffeting at speed, Neck-Level Heaters in the headrests extend top-down driving into cooler weather, and the seats and trim use materials that tolerate sun and occasional rain. The Dashboard and Infotainment Head Unit are shared with the coupe.

Convertibles span small two-seat roadsters, 2+2 cabriolets like this one, and large luxury four-seaters, and they come with either fabric soft tops or folding hard tops. They are bought for the experience of open driving rather than outright practicality, and they command a premium over the closed cars they share a platform with, reflecting the extra structure, the roof mechanism, and the safety hardware the format demands.

Soft top versus folding hard top

Two roof technologies compete in this class. The fabric Soft-Top Cover shown here is light, folds into a small stack, and leaves more boot space when stowed, but it is less secure and slightly noisier at speed. A folding hard top trades those qualities the other way: it gives a closed car's quietness and security but is heavier, more complex, and eats more luggage space when folded because the rigid panels need room to nest. Both rely on the same Hydraulic Power Unit approach to power the fold and the same Roof Position Sensor feedback so the Roof Control Module can stop the cycle if anything is out of place. The choice shapes the rest of the car: a heavier hard top demands more of the Body Shell reinforcement and the suspension tune.

Weight, refinement, and the open-air trade

Every design decision in a convertible flows from the missing roof. The added Reinforced Floor Pan, Reinforced Side Sills, and Cowl Reinforcement Bar together can add a hundred kilograms or more over the closed car, which the Chassis tune must absorb. Wind management becomes an engineering task rather than an afterthought: the Wind Deflector and Neck-Level Heaters exist because an open cabin is exposed to buffeting and cold. Even with all this, an open body can never be quite as stiff or as quiet as a closed one, so the convertible accepts a measurable penalty in weight and refinement in exchange for the open-air experience. Buyers who want that experience accept the trade, which is why the format endures across price points despite being heavier and costlier than the coupe it derives from.
