Panel Van

Product

Overview

A panel van is a light commercial vehicle built around an enclosed cargo box with solid side panels and no rear side windows. It is the workhorse of urban delivery and trades and is designed to carry the most cargo for a given footprint while remaining easy to drive on a standard licence. The defining features are a tall, square Cargo Body for maximum load volume, a durable Powertrain sized for repeated heavy use, and a Chassis rated to carry payload near the rear axle. Everything is specified for low running cost and high uptime rather than comfort or performance.

Powertrain

The Powertrain almost universally uses a Turbodiesel Engine, a four-cylinder common-rail turbodiesel of around 2.0 to 2.3 litres. Diesel suits the duty cycle: high torque at low speed for pulling away fully laden, and good fuel economy over long delivery routes. The Engine Block is cast iron for durability under sustained load, and a Turbocharger forces extra air into the cylinders so a modest displacement can move a heavy vehicle. Fuel is delivered at very high pressure from the Common-Rail Fuel Rail through a Common-Rail Injector in each cylinder, and a Glow Plug in each cylinder aids cold starting.

Drive passes through a Clutch to a six-speed Transmission, available as a manual or an automatic. The gearing is chosen for load-hauling, with a low first gear for moving off on a gradient when full. A Drive Shaft carries torque to the driven wheels, and four Engine Mount mounts isolate the cab from engine vibration.

Cargo body

The Cargo Body is the reason the van exists. A welded steel Body Structure forms a tall box with a low load floor, large solid Side Panel panels, and a high Roof Panel that maximises internal volume. Loading is through twin hinged Rear Door doors that open wide, and a Sliding Side Door sliding door on rollers for kerbside access in tight streets. A Cargo Bulkhead partition separates the cargo area from the cab, protecting the driver from shifting loads and improving cab climate by sealing off the unheated cargo space.

The solid sides are not just for security. Without window openings the body is stiffer and stronger, the load area is fully usable up to the roof, and the blank panels are often used for company signage. The only glazing is the Windshield and the cab door windows.

Chassis

The Chassis is built to carry payload. The front uses a Front Strut strut with a Coil Spring, while the rear uses a Rear Axle beam axle on Leaf Spring springs. Leaf springs are chosen deliberately: they handle large load variation between empty and full, are cheap and robust, and locate the axle without extra links. Both front and rear wheels use Front Brake and Rear Brake disc brakes with anti-lock control, sized for the high gross weight, since a fully laden van takes much longer to stop than a car.

The Wheel Assembly assemblies use heavy-gauge steel rims and reinforced Commercial Tyre tyres with a high load rating. The Steering Rack rack is power-assisted to manage the weight on the front axle, especially at parking speeds.

Cargo fit-out

Beyond the bare body, the Cargo Fit-Out makes the load space usable and durable. A Floor Liner of plywood or composite protects the metal floor from scuffing and impact, and Wall Lining panels protect the lower walls. Multiple Lashing Ring lashing rings let the operator secure loads against braking and cornering, which is both a safety requirement and a way to prevent cargo damage. A pair of Cargo Lamp lamps illuminate the load area for early-morning and late deliveries.

Electrical system

The Electrical System system is conventional but sized for accessories. A 12 V 12 V Battery is charged by a Alternator, with a Starter Motor motor for the diesel. Two Electronic Control Unit units, one for the engine and one for body functions, manage the vehicle, and the Wiring Harness runs power through a fuse box and relays to the cargo lights, doors and accessories. Many operators add a second battery and a higher-output alternator to run refrigeration or tools, so the base wiring is designed with headroom. Lighting uses Headlamp units with reflector optics and replaceable bulbs.

Cab and climate

The Cab seats two or three on hard-wearing Cab Seat units, often a single driver seat beside a two-place bench. The Dashboard carries an Instrument Cluster and a Radio Head Unit head unit that usually accepts a reversing camera feed, valuable given the blank rear panels and poor over-shoulder visibility. A wipe-clean Cab Floor Mat mat suits muddy boots and frequent entry and exit. The HVAC Unit unit provides heating, ventilation and air conditioning for the cab only, since the cargo area is unheated.

Use and operation

Panel vans serve parcel delivery, trades, mobile services and light haulage. Operators care most about payload, load volume, fuel economy, reliability and the cost of downtime. The flat floor, wide rear opening and sliding side door make repeated loading fast, and the solid body keeps cargo secure and dry. The trade-offs are ride comfort when empty, which can be harsh because the suspension is tuned for load, and rearward visibility, which is handled with cameras and sensors. Vans are typically run for several hundred thousand kilometres over a working life and are valued on the cost per delivery rather than on any single specification.
