Flatbed Trailer
ProductOverview
A flatbed semi-trailer is an open-deck trailer that couples to a tractor fifth wheel and carries freight that does not fit inside an enclosed van. Because the deck is open on all sides and the top, cargo can be loaded by forklift from either side, by crane from above, or by driving equipment up ramps from the rear. This flexibility makes the flatbed the standard tool for steel coils, lumber, machinery, building materials, and pipe.
Standard decks are 48 or 53 ft long and 102 in wide. Laden deck height runs 58 to 62 in, which sets how much vertical clearance remains under the legal 13 ft 6 in road limit. A flatbed with a tare weight near 11,000 lb can legally carry roughly 48,000 lb of payload before reaching an 80,000 lb gross combination weight. The Coupling System transfers the front portion of that load to the tractor, while the Axle & Suspension carries the rear.
Frame and Deck
The load path begins at the Main Frame. Two tapered I-beam Mainrail I-Beam rails run the full length, deepest at the center where bending moment peaks and shallower toward the ends. Lateral Crossmember Channel channels on 12 in centers tie the rails together and form the surface that supports the deck. At the neck and rear, Bolster Gusset gussets reinforce the regions where the frame changes section.
On top of the steel sits the Deck Assembly. Most flatbeds use 1.75 in apitong hardwood Apitong Deck Board planks because the wood resists forklift wheel loads and grips chains better than bare steel. Composite or laminated oak decks are used where weight savings matter. Boards are anchored with Deck Screw fasteners and carriage bolts, and an edge Edge Nailer Strip retains the outermost plank against the rub rail.
Suspension and Axles
The Axle & Suspension is a tandem axle group, with a third axle added for tridem heavy-haul work. Each Axle Beam is a forged 5 in tube carrying spindle ends, brake spiders, and a Wheel Hub at each side. The hubs ride on tapered roller Ball Bearing sets sealed by an Oil Seal at the inner race. A Trailing Arm locates each wheel and supports an air Air Spring Bellows bellows, with a Suspension Shock damper controlling motion. A single Height Control Valve meters air to hold the deck at a constant ride height regardless of load, which keeps the kingpin at the correct fifth-wheel elevation.
Braking
The Air Brake System is a dual-circuit air system. Each wheel end has a Type 30/30 Spring Brake Chamber that provides service braking from air pressure and parking braking from an internal spring when air is released. Chamber stroke turns an S-cam through an Automatic Slack Adjuster that forces a Brake Shoe against the cast iron Brake Drum. Air is stored in steel Air Reservoir Tank reservoirs and delivered through a Relay Valve that shortens the lag between the tractor treadle and the trailer brakes. Service and emergency lines connect through a Gladhand Coupler coupler at the nose. Wheel-lock control comes from the Electrical System system, where an ABS Control Unit reads each Wheel-Speed Sensor and modulates the relay valve.
Coupling and Landing Gear
When the trailer is parked, its weight rests on the Landing Gear. A Landing Crank turns a two-speed Landing Gearbox that drives a lift screw inside each Landing Leg, with a Sand Shoe sand shoe spreading the load on soft ground. To connect, the tractor backs under the Upper Coupler Plate plate until the fifth wheel jaws lock around the SAE 2 in Kingpin. A hardened Apron Wear Plate takes the rubbing wear against the fifth wheel top.
Cargo Securement
Open freight must be tied down, so the Cargo Securement hardware runs the full deck. Sliding Strap Winch units travel along a side Winch Track so straps can be placed anywhere along the load. A Cargo Strap of 4 in polyester or a chain runs over the cargo and down to a Stake Pocket or a recessed D-Ring Tie-Down. The Rub Rail along each edge protects the deck and provides a hard point for hooks. Federal cargo rules set the number and working load of these devices based on cargo weight and length.
Variants and Use
Flatbeds appear as fixed-length and sliding-axle models, the latter letting the operator shift weight between axles to meet bridge laws. Step-deck and double-drop versions lower part of the deck to carry taller loads under the height limit. Conestoga versions add a rolling tarp system over the open deck. The flatbed remains the workhorse for any load that is too heavy, too tall, or too awkward for an enclosed van, and its simplicity keeps maintenance focused on tires, brakes, deck boards, and lighting.
