Dump Trailer

Product

Overview

A dump trailer is a tipping semi-trailer that carries bulk material such as aggregate, sand, demolition debris, ore, or grain and unloads it by raising the front of the body so the load slides out the rear. It is towed by a road tractor through a fifth-wheel coupling and is one of the most common pieces of equipment in construction, mining, and earthmoving fleets. The end-dump configuration covered here lifts the whole body about a rear hinge, in contrast to belly-dump and side-dump variants that discharge through gates underneath or to one side.

The trailer is built around a welded steel chassis frame that carries the dump body, reacts the loads from the hydraulic hoist, and mounts the suspension and axles. Power to raise the body comes from a hydraulic power unit driven by the tractor power take-off or by an onboard electric pump. The coupling and running gear connect the trailer to the tractor and to the road.

Body and tailgate

The dump body is an open-top steel box. The floor plate takes the worst wear because rock and ore gouge it as the load slides during dumping, so it is made from AR400 abrasion-resistant steel between 6 and 10 mm thick. The side walls are thinner formed panels stiffened with vertical channels, and the front headboard is reinforced because the load shifts forward against it when the body tips.

The rear tailgate is hinged at the top through the tailgate hinges so it swings open as the body rises, letting material pour out in a controlled stream rather than dropping all at once. The lower edge is held by gravity or air-release latches during transit. On grain and agricultural bodies the tailgate often has an adjustable opening so the discharge rate can be metered.

Hoist and hydraulics

The hydraulic hoist is a front-mounted telescopic cylinder. The telescopic cylinder has three to five stages so it can give a long stroke from a short collapsed length, raising the body to a dump angle of 45 to 50 degrees. It pivots on trunnions top and bottom and is retained by hardened pivot pins, because the cylinder must swing as the body angle changes.

Oil comes from the hydraulic power unit. The gear pump pressurizes the circuit to between 210 and 250 bar, drawing from the oil reservoir and routing flow through the control valve and high-pressure hoses. The valve raises, holds, or controllably lowers the body, and a return filter keeps the oil clean. Controlled lowering matters: dropping a raised body freely would shock-load the frame and the cylinder.

Suspension, axles, and brakes

The suspension and axle group is usually tandem or tridem. Each axle beam is rated near 11 to 13 tonnes and carries an air brake assembly with a cast iron drum, lined shoes, and a spring brake chamber. The leaf or air springs sit on equalizer beams so the axles share load over uneven ground, which is common on the rough sites these trailers work.

The running gear mounts the disc wheels and tires on hubs running on tapered roller bearings sealed by grease seals.

Coupling and stability

The coupling joins the trailer to the tractor through a forged kingpin set into the gooseneck plate. When uncoupled the landing gear, a two-speed screw jack using a screw leg and reduction gears, holds the front up.

End-dump trailers are most prone to rollover at full lift, because the centre of gravity rises and any side slope or sticky load can tip the body. Operators dump only on firm level ground and watch for material hanging up. The electrical system runs the LED lamp clusters through the harness and trailer plug, with relays switching the heavier lighting and brake loads.

Variants and use

Aggregate and demolition haulers use thick-floor steel bodies, while grain and agricultural operators use lighter high-volume bodies with metering tailgates. Mining versions use even heavier plate and larger hoists, and frameless designs hang the body directly off the suspension to save weight. Insulated and heated bodies carry hot asphalt, where the floor plate is double-skinned and exhaust gas is routed underneath to keep the mix workable until it is laid.

A typical work cycle is short: the tractor backs the trailer into position, the driver engages the pump from the cab, the cylinder raises the body over about thirty seconds, the tailgate swings open under the weight of material, and the load slides out. The body is then lowered and the cycle repeats at the loading site. Because the hoist does heavy work many times a day, the oil in the reservoir is kept clean by the return filter and checked for the heat that constant cycling generates.

The end-dump layout is favored where fast, complete unloading matters and where the ground can support a raised body without the rollover risk that comes with tipping a tall load. On soft or sloping ground operators choose belly-dump or side-dump trailers instead, which keep the body low while discharging, but the end-dump remains the most common choice for general earthmoving and construction haulage.
