Overview

A flatbed truck carries freight on an open, level deck rather than inside an enclosure, which is what makes it the workhorse for loads that are heavy, long, irregular, or must be loaded from the side or top by crane and forklift — structural steel, lumber, machinery, building materials, and palletised goods. The trade-off is exposure: cargo must be lashed down and often tarped, since nothing but the tie-downs holds it on. Built as a Class 7–8 chassis with tandem rear drive axles, the flatbed couples a heavy diesel driveline to a flat steel platform whose stake pockets and tie-down rails turn the bare deck into a versatile securing surface.

How it works

Drive comes from the Diesel Engine, a large turbocharged inline-six with common-rail injection cooled by a front radiator and pump, producing the low-end torque a fully loaded truck needs. That torque runs through the Transmission, a multi-speed manual or automated gearbox, to the Tandem Drive Axles group: two driven rear axles with through-drive that spread both weight and traction across eight wheels. The Suspension carries the load on multi-leaf springs with an equaliser balancing the tandem pair, and full Air Brakes with discs and spring parking brakes stop the rig. Everything mounts to the Ladder-Frame Chassis.

The load surface is the Flatbed Platform: a plate-steel or hardwood deck on crossmembers, fronted by a Headboard that shields the cab from shifting cargo. Around the perimeter, stake pockets accept removable side racks while tie-down rails and rub rails anchor the straps and chains that secure the load. The driver works from the Cab, the Electrical System system runs the lights and marker lamps that an open load makes essential, and a frame-mounted Fuel Tank feeds the engine over long hauls.
