Lowboy Trailer

Product

Overview

A lowboy trailer carries tall, heavy machinery that no flatbed could move under the legal height limit. By dropping the deck to within roughly 18 to 24 in of the road, a lowboy lets a piece of equipment that is itself 10 to 11 ft tall ride under the 13 ft 6 in clearance limit. This is why excavators, dozers, cranes, transformers, and large industrial machines move on lowboys rather than flat decks.

The trailer is built in three height regions: a high gooseneck over the tractor, a low well deck for the cargo, and a raised rear over the axles. The deep beams that make the low well possible are the most heavily engineered part of the trailer. Payload ranges from 40,000 lb on a light three-axle unit to well over 80,000 lb when extra axles, jeeps, and boosters spread the load to meet bridge laws.

Detachable Gooseneck

Most modern lowboys use a removable gooseneck, called an RGN. The Detachable Gooseneck is a fabricated steel Gooseneck Frame that rises over the tractor and carries the Upper Coupler Plate plate and a heavy Heavy Kingpin. To load from the front, the driver uses the Hydraulic System to drive Detach Cylinder rams that lift the gooseneck while Stinger Support Leg supports hold it, then pulls the tractor forward so the gooseneck separates from the deck. The front of the well now sits on the ground, and a Flip Ramp Extension ramp lets equipment drive straight onto the deck. Reversing the process raises the deck and reconnects the gooseneck.

Main Deck

The Main Deck is the structural heart of the trailer. Two high-strength Deck Mainrail I-beams run the length of the well, and because the deck sits so low, these beams must be deep and made from high-yield steel to carry the bending load without exceeding the height budget. Heavy Deck Crossmember members on close centers tie the beams, and a surface of apitong Deck Plank planks gives traction for tracked and wheeled machines. A Side Rail with chain slots runs each edge, and removable Deck Outrigger extensions widen the deck for over-width loads under permit.

Axles and Suspension

The Axle Group spreads the load across three to five axles. Each Heavy Axle Beam is a heavy forging carrying a Wheel Hub on tapered roller Ball Bearing sets sealed by an Oil Seal. A Suspension Arm locates each wheel, supporting an Air Spring Bellows and a Suspension Shock damper. A rear Self-Steering Axle can be fitted so the trailing axles caster and follow the tractor through tight turns, reducing tire scrub and the swing of a long load. For the heaviest permit loads, separate jeep and booster axle sets are coupled ahead of and behind the trailer to lower the load on any single axle.

Hydraulics, Braking, and Loading Ramps

The Hydraulic System is fed by a Hydraulic Pump drawing from a Hydraulic Reservoir, with a Hydraulic Control Valve directing oil through Hydraulic Hose lines to the detach and Deck Lift Cylinder rams. Power comes from a tractor wet-line or an onboard unit.

The Air Brake System places a Spring Brake Chamber at every wheel, acting on a Brake Drum through a Slack Adjuster and S-cam. Air is stored in several Air Reservoir reservoirs and split between front and rear groups by Relay valves, with ABS managed by the Electrical System system through its ABS Control Unit. On fixed-gooseneck or non-detach models, the Loading Ramp at the rear, using a Ramp Plate on heavy Ramp Hinge sets with assist Coil Spring units, lets equipment drive on from behind.

Securement

Heavy machinery is held with the Cargo Securement hardware. A Grade 70 Transport Chain runs from a weld-on Chain Anchor over the equipment and is tensioned by a ratchet Ratchet Binder, while recessed D-Ring Tie-Down points in the deck give extra attachment positions. Federal rules set the number of chains and their working load by the weight of the machine, and tracked equipment such as dozers and excavators usually requires four corner chains plus separate attachment of the bucket, blade, or boom so they cannot swing in transit. Drivers re-check chain tension shortly after starting because a machine settles into the deck planks as the truck begins to move.

Permits and Routing

Because a loaded lowboy is often over-height, over-width, or over-weight, it almost always moves under a permit. The route is chosen to avoid low bridges, weak structures, and tight intersections, and over-width or over-height loads may need pilot or escort vehicles front and rear. The added axles, jeeps, and boosters exist specifically to spread weight so the rig stays within the per-axle limits in bridge formula law. This permitting and routing work is as much a part of heavy-haul operation as the trailer hardware itself.

Variants and Use

Lowboys are sold as fixed-gooseneck, mechanical-detach, and hydraulic-detach (RGN) types, with axle counts and add-on modules chosen for the load and the route permit. They are the standard mover for construction, mining, and utility equipment that is too tall, too heavy, or too wide for any other open trailer, from excavators and dozers to transformers, crushers, and crane components.
