Formula-Style Race Car Product

Overview

A formula-style race car is an open-wheel single-seater in which every major component is a structural or aerodynamic element: the carbon monocoque is the chassis, the engine bolts to its rear face as a load-bearing member, the gearbox casing carries the rear suspension, and the bodywork exists to generate downforce. At the Formula 1 level the result weighs about 800 kg with driver, produces around 745 kW, and corners at up to 5 g because the aerodynamics press it onto the road with more than three times its own weight at speed.

Survival cell

The Carbon Monocoque is the car's structural core and the driver's crash protection in one. The Monocoque Tub is laid up from carbon skins over aluminum honeycomb and autoclave-cured at about 7 bar, yielding a roughly 35 kg cell stiff enough to react several thousand newton-meters per degree of torsion. Ahead of the Front Bulkhead, the sacrificial Nose Crash Structure absorbs frontal impact energy in controlled crush; Side Impact Tube members handle lateral hits; and the titanium Halo above the cockpit carries a 12-tonne static proof load — it has deflected cars, debris, and barriers off drivers' heads since 2018. The driver lies in a personally molded Molded Seat Insert, extractable with the seat after an accident, surrounded by the Energy-Absorbing Headrest energy-absorbing foam.

Power unit and transmission

The Power Unit is a 1.6 L V6 turbo-hybrid whose Engine Block is machined to take chassis loads: the tub bolts to its front face and the gearbox to its rear, with no frame around it. Internals are extreme — billet Racing Piston crowns surviving 26 m/s mean piston speed at the 15,000 rpm limit, a sub-6 kg Crankshaft, and a Pneumatic Valvetrain using nitrogen pressure instead of steel springs because no spring can follow the cam at those speeds. The Turbocharger spins to 125,000 rpm; the MGU-K recovers up to 120 kW under braking into the Energy Store — about 4 MJ cycled per lap through its LiPo Cell pack and IGBT Power Module inverter — and redeploys it on corner exit. A Dry Sump System keeps oil pressure stable at 5 g and lets the engine sit 50 mm lower than a wet sump would allow; induction air rams in through the roll-hoop Airbox and leaves through 1,000 °C Inconel Exhaust System headers.

The Sequential Gearbox is an 8-speed sequential transaxle whose Gearbox Casing is itself the chassis aft of the engine, carrying suspension pickups and the Rear Crash Structure. A paddle command fires the Shift Actuator, which indexes the Barrel Selector drum one position, sliding dog rings across the straight-cut Gear Cluster in 20 to 40 ms with no torque interruption a driver can feel. The 100 mm Carbon Clutch Pack of carbon plates is used mainly at the launch; corner-by-corner traction is managed instead by the hydraulically mapped Limited-Slip Differential.

Aerodynamics

Downforce comes from three coupled systems. The Front Wing — a Front Wing Mainplane with stacked Front Wing Flap elements between Front Wing Endplate walls — generates about a quarter of total load and, just as importantly, sets up the outwash that keeps front-tire wake off everything downstream. The Floor and Diffuser is the largest contributor: twin Venturi Tunnel channels accelerate underbody air into low pressure, Floor Fence vanes spin up vortices that seal the floor edges, and the Rear Diffuser recovers the flow to ambient — its expansion ratio sets how hard the whole floor can pull. The regulation Skid Plank under it all polices minimum ride height by wear. At the back, the Rear Wing adds roughly a third of the load, with the Beam Wing coupling diffuser exit flow to the Rear Wing Mainplane; the DRS Flap rotates open on the straights via its fail-closed DRS Actuator, shedding about 10 percent of drag for overtaking.

Suspension and brakes

The Pushrod Suspension uses aerofoil-section Wishbone Set pairs at each corner — they locate the wheel and condition airflow simultaneously. Wheel loads travel up each Pushrod into a Suspension Rocker bellcrank that twists a splined Torsion Bar Spring and strokes an Inboard Damper, keeping every spring and damper inside the bodywork. Each Wheel Upright carries a six-piston Brake Caliper on a Carbon Brake Disc that operates between 350 and 1,000 °C — below that window carbon-carbon barely bites — fed cooling air by a precisely sized Brake Duct. Wheels are single-nut center-lock Wheel and Slick Tire assemblies changed in under two seconds.

Driver interface

The Cockpit Controls concentrate the car's operation into the quick-release Steering Wheel: Shift Paddle levers, clutch paddles, eight Rotary Switch dials for engine, differential, and brake-balance maps, and an LCD Panel dash. The Pedal Box splits braking across twin master cylinders with a driver-adjustable bias bar. The Electronic Control Unit — a standardized unit in F1 — runs engine, gearbox, DRS, and clutch while streaming some 300 sensor channels through the Wiring Loom to the pit wall. The driver straps in with a quarter-turn Six-Point Harness and is backed by a plumbed Fire Suppression System and the FT5 Fuel Cell bladder, which holds the 110 kg race fuel load inside the survival cell where it cannot be torn open. Sidepod Radiator cores, the Oil Cooler, and the Charge Air Cooler together reject around 200 kW of waste heat through ducting shaped by the Sidepod Bodywork bodywork.
